October 24th week in review
A look back at the week in retro gaming, from Krikzz's new PlayStation 1 ODE and Azahar's 3DS audio update to Atari's offline plans for the VCS.
This week in retro gaming brought a mix of hardware preservation news, emulator updates, and one unusually graceful console retirement. Between solderless PlayStation mods and mobile cloud saves, there was plenty to keep track of over the last seven days. Here is everything we covered on the site this week.
EverDrive creator Krikzz is making a plug-and-play PlayStation 1 ODE ([EverDrive creator Krikzz is making a plug-and-play PlayStation 1 ODE](https://pantspantsrevolution.com/everdrive-creator-krikzz-is-making-a-plug-and-play-playstati/)). Krikzz has announced a solderless, plug-and-play optical drive emulator for the original PlayStation. For anyone who doesn't trust themselves near a thirty-year-old motherboard with a hot soldering iron, a drop-in replacement for dying CD-ROM drives is welcome news.

Azahar 2127.0 Alpha 3 adds CSND audio emulation for 3DS applets ([Azahar 2127.0 Alpha 3 adds CSND audio emulation for 3ds applets](https://pantspantsrevolution.com/azahar-2127-0-alpha-3-adds-csnd-audio-emulation-for-3ds-appl/)). The open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator Azahar added CSND audio support in its 2127.0 Alpha 3 test build. The update brings working sound to system applets, 3GX plugins, and early homebrew software.
Afterplay brings its cloud emulation platform to iOS and Android ([Afterplay brings its cloud emulation platform to iOS and Android](https://pantspantsrevolution.com/afterplay-brings-its-cloud-emulation-platform-to-ios-and-and/)). Five years after getting its start in web browsers, Patrick Corrigan's cross-device emulator and indie retro storefront now has dedicated mobile apps. It's a natural step for a platform built around carrying your saves between different screens.
Atari is closing the VCS store in 2027 and taking the console offline ([Atari is closing the VCS store in 2027 and taking the console offline](https://pantspantsrevolution.com/atari-is-closing-the-vcs-store-in-2027-and-taking-the-consol/)). Atari will shut down the VCS digital storefront on February 1, 2027, and take the system offline. Rather than leaving owners with a paperweight, the company is rolling out a final OS update that removes server checks and opens the machine up for homebrew.
Crystal of Atlan brings Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. To PlayStation ([Crystal of Atlan brings Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. To PlayStation](https://pantspantsrevolution.com/crystal-of-atlan-brings-ghost-in-the-shell-s-a-c-to-playstation/)). The free-to-play magicpunk action RPG is adding Tachikoma mounts, a chibi Motoko Kusanagi pet, and Section 9 combat modes on October 28. The crossover event also arrives alongside a level 80 cap increase.
We'll be back next week with more retro gaming news as October wraps up and the Ghost in the Shell crossover goes live.
