Horror RPG Look Outside launches on PlayStation and Switch

Survival horror RPG Look Outside is available today on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 for $9.99. Publisher Devolver Digital and developer Francis Coulombe first announced the console ports, handled by MP2 Games, on October 23. Console players can grab the game right now via the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop, while the original PC version remains on Steam.

Before making the jump to consoles, the game was a quiet juggernaut on PC after its surprise release on March 21, 2025. Coulombe shared the sales numbers in a deadpan launch message alongside the release, punctuating his own shock at its runaway popularity with flat little cheers.

A side project that sold 500,000 copies

The whole thing began in October 2024 as an entry for the month-long Hawktober Horrors game jam on itch.io. Coulombe (a Canadian pixel artist and animator whose past sprite work includes Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden and Kingdoms of the Dump) only built it as a distraction from his main decade-long project, a larger fantasy horror RPG called Malison: The Cursed City.

"It started as a game jam project while I worked on another game, The Cursed City of Malison, and I put it up on itch. And people seem to love it. Yay. So, we released it on Steam and it went on to sell over 500,000 copies. Yay."

That initial RPG Maker prototype blew up online, and since Coulombe was already talking with Devolver Digital about other pitches, they agreed to turn it into a commercial game. He brought in indie developer friends and composer Eric Shumaker to flesh out the prototype, hoping to wrap it up in a month or two before the internet moved on. It took five months instead.

Missing the early wave of viral attention clearly didn't hurt it. Half a million copies for a $10 RPG Maker game built to fund a completely different project is an absurdly good return, though I do wonder if Malison just got pushed back another five years as a result.

Don't look out the window

The premise traps a solitary resident named Sam inside a four-story apartment building during an apocalyptic event. Anything that looks out the window mutates into a grotesque pile of teeth, eyes, and tangled limbs, which makes going downstairs to check the mail a serious tactical problem.

Players spend the 10-to-12-hour campaign scavenging the hallways for weapons and supplies, clashing with over 150 hand-crafted creatures in turn-based combat, and retreating to Sam's apartment to recover. Back home, you cook dinner, craft tools, play video games to keep Sam's sanity intact, and figure out which of the surviving visitors knocking on your door can actually be trusted as party members.

Coulombe's body horror pixel art is genuinely stomach-turning, and I'm curious how well the tiny, detailed status text translates to a handheld Switch screen without making players squint. At 771 MB and ten bucks, it's an easy pickup for Halloween night. Just keep the blinds closed.
