Unity Technologies has officially opened the application process for its 2026 Unity for Humanity Grant. According to the announcement on the company blog, the initiative will award a total of $600,000 USD to creators who use real-time 3D (RT3D) technology to address social issues.

Most of us know Unity as the engine powering everything from high-end indie darlings to the mobile game you play while waiting for the bus. However, this grant specifically targets projects that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This covers a broad range of topics, including sustainability, inclusivity, and equity.

Real-Time 3D for Real-World Problems

The program is designed to support projects that might not fit the traditional commercial game development mold. Unity is looking for work that uses their engine to "build a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable world."

"In 2026, we’re awarding $600,000 USD across multiple projects to empower creators advancing global goals in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," the company stated.

To assist potential applicants who might be better at coding shaders than writing grant proposals, Unity has released two resources. The "Unity for Humanity: Guide for Creators" serves as a short course to get projects started. Additionally, they have published an "Examples from Past Winners" guide to show exactly what kind of work tends to secure funding.

Why This Matters

While our focus here is usually on preserving the past, it is interesting to see how the tools used to build retro-inspired platformers are being applied to humanitarian efforts. The grant highlights the versatility of the Unity engine outside of the entertainment sector. For developers working on educational or socially conscious software, this is a significant pool of funding that does not require a publisher pitch deck.

Applications are currently open via the Unity for Humanity page.
