French-Bread and TYPE-MOON have locked in an April 22, 2027 release date for MELTY BLOOD: TWI-LUMINA. A new release date trailer confirms the launch details while showing off gameplay for the dream familiar Len, ending with a post-credits tease for White Len.

The game was originally announced at EVO Japan in May 2026. According to the English official site and the Japanese portal, the fighter will launch simultaneously across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. Aniplex is handling the publishing duties.

The Melty Blood franchise started in 2002 as a collaborative dōjin fighter between TYPE-MOON and Watanabe Seisakujo (the studio that later became French-Bread). It was built as a spin-off to the Tsukihime visual novel. The series spent two decades as a grassroots tournament staple before getting a modern reboot in 2021 with MELTY BLOOD: TYPE LUMINA. That reboot modernized the netcode and added an accessible auto-combo system, but it also left out several classic characters. Len and White Len were among the most requested omissions.

TWI-LUMINA acts as a direct successor to the 2021 game rather than another ground-up reboot. It brings back those missing fighters alongside upgraded battle mechanics, refined visual presentation, and a new story scenario written by Kinoko Nasu set around Souya City. I want to see how the mechanical changes affect the flow of matches, especially since the previous game leaned so heavily on its Rapid Beat system.

The new footage focuses entirely on Len. The trailer demonstrates her using familiar cat transformations for mobility and combo extensions, culminating in her Arc Drive super attack. The final seconds drop a voice line promising "a nightmare you'll never awaken from" over a new illustration of White Len by Takashi Takeuchi.

French-Bread has built a reputation for fluid 2D anime sprite combat over the last two decades, developing both the Melty Blood series and the Under Night In-Birth franchise. Their games typically emphasize high-speed aerial movement and reverse beat combo mechanics, which allow players to chain heavy attacks into lighter ones. TWI-LUMINA appears to maintain that core philosophy while iterating on the systems introduced in 2021.

I am curious how the player base will transition between the two games. Fighting game communities can be notoriously stubborn about moving to sequels if the mechanics change too drastically, but the return of legacy characters like Len usually helps smooth that process over.

The inclusion of Nintendo Switch 2 in the platform list is notable, making this one of the earlier fighting games to explicitly confirm support for Nintendo's next hardware alongside the current Switch. The game will feature Japanese voiceover with subtitle support for English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
