Mario Kart Wii Deluxe X just dropped with 752 tracks and four different editions
A massive new mod for Mario Kart Wii, 'The Colors Editions,' drops today, bringing 752 tracks, new characters like Pauline, and gameplay tweaks.
Mario Kart Wii Deluxe X, one of the most ambitious mods ever made for the 2008 Wii racer, just released its v10 "Colors Editions" update. The numbers are absurd: 752 playable tracks, pulled from nearly every Mario Kart game in existence. That includes courses from the original Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 all the way through to Mario Kart World on the Switch 2, plus deep cuts from Tour and the Arcade GP series.
Four colors, four flavors
The headline feature of the X release is its four colored editions, each with a different philosophy:
Blue Edition is the base version, modeled after the latest official Mario Kart game. It brings character selection animations for Mario and Pauline from Mario Kart World, along with that game's interface style, music, and new vehicles. If you want the most "modern Mario Kart" feel on Wii hardware, this is the one.
Red Edition takes its cues from Mario Kart Tour. It adds new character skins and restores original Nintendo music to the official tracks. Each edition also gets its own item box design, with Red using the Mario Kart 8 style.
Green Edition goes full Super Smash Bros., pulling characters from across Nintendo and beyond. This update adds Kirby and Olimar to the playable roster, alongside updated models for Pac-Man and Bomberman. Music on official tracks gets the Smash treatment, and item boxes use a custom original design.
Purple Edition is built for tinkerers. It runs through Riivolution and is designed to support character mods and other custom changes. This update brings the Purple edition back as a selectable option, with original elements to customize and custom music on all tracks.
Gameplay changes across all editions
The update goes well beyond track count. Double item boxes, borrowed from Mario Kart: Double Dash, are now a feature. A real-time item tracking system shows what every racer is holding on the minimap. Golden Mushrooms now display a duration bar so you can see exactly how much boost time remains. Star animations have been reworked to match Mario Kart DS, and a redesigned Blooper rounds out the visual changes.
On the mechanical side, shock squishing is in (exactly as chaotic as it sounds), some vehicles have had their statistics adjusted, and framerate options give players more control over performance. The Tour tracks have also been optimized for the mod.
How to play it
Mario Kart Wii Deluxe X works on both the Dolphin emulator and real Wii hardware via Riivolution loading. The mod is available through the Mario Kart Wii Deluxe X Discord server, where players can choose their preferred colored edition. The Purple (Riivolution) version is also available from the Custom Mario Kart Wiiki.
You will need a copy of Mario Kart Wii to play the mod. Given that the original game sold over 37 million copies on the Wii, that shouldn't be too hard to track down.
