Epic Games Store offers Bloons TD 6 for free starting January 8
The tower defense hit is available for free, continuing the legacy of the Flash game era on modern hardware.
The Epic Games Store has listed Bloons TD 6 as its latest free title available for download starting January 8, 2026. According to the store page, the tower defense strategy game is available at a 100% discount for a limited time.
For those who missed the browser game boom of the late 2000s, the premise here is deceptively simple. You command an army of monkeys. They hate balloons. You place the monkeys on a map to pop the balloons before they reach the exit. It is a gameplay loop that has consumed more productivity hours than perhaps any other franchise born from the Adobe Flash era.
From Flash to Full Release
While Bloons TD 6 is a modern release from 2018, its DNA is firmly rooted in the history of browser-based gaming. Developer Ninja Kiwi originally released the first Bloons title in 2007 as a Flash game. As preservationists struggle to maintain playable archives of the Flash era following Adobe's discontinuation of the plugin, Bloons stands as a rare example of a series that successfully migrated from browser windows to standalone executables.
This sixth entry distinguishes itself from its 2D predecessors with a shift to 3D graphics and the introduction of "Hero" units. These specialized towers level up automatically during gameplay, adding a layer of RPG-lite progression to the standard tower defense formula. The game also supports 4-player co-op, allowing multiple people to coordinate their anti-balloon strategies simultaneously.
Preserving the "Desktop Defender" Genre
The tower defense genre saw its golden age during the height of the Warcraft III custom map scene and the subsequent explosion of Flash portals like Newgrounds and Kongregate. Most of those titles are now difficult to play on modern hardware without specialized emulation environments like Ruffle.
Bloons TD 6 preserves the specific "desktop defender" gameplay loop that defined that period. It requires the player to manage economy, spatial positioning, and upgrade trees in real-time. Obtaining the title for free offers a low-risk entry point into a genre that has largely receded from the mainstream spotlight in favor of MOBAs and battle royales.
