Epic Games Store adds SunBlockers and NightReaper2 to February free game lineup
Two bonus titles have joined the Epic Games Store free rotation through February 27, including one title that isn't currently available on Steam.
The Epic Games Store has updated its promotional lineup to include SunBlockers and NightReaper2 as free downloads available through February 27. As detailed in a community announcement, these two bonus titles have been added to the storefront's rotation and require only a standard Epic Games account to claim.
We are all familiar with the ritual by now. You open the launcher, navigate past the Fortnite advertisements, click a button, and watch your library grow by two integers. Whether you actually install the games is secondary to the act of acquiring them. It is the digital equivalent of taking a free pen from a bank counter, except the pen requires several gigabytes of storage space.
The Platform Split
The inclusion of SunBlockers highlights a specific quirk of the current PC gaming marketplace. According to the release notes, this title does not currently have a store page on Steam. This fragmentation is becoming increasingly common as developers choose specific storefronts for early releases or exclusivity deals. For the end user, it means keeping multiple launchers updated is no longer optional if you want access to the full breadth of indie releases.
NightReaper2, conversely, does maintain a presence on Steam. Experienced users often use this to their advantage. While you might claim the game on Epic for free, the Steam page remains a valuable resource for checking user reviews, community discussions, and detailed system requirements that might be less visible on Epic's more streamlined interface.
A Strategy of Scale
Epic Games has utilized this loss-leader strategy since the storefront launched in December 2018. The program began with Unknown Worlds' survival hit Subnautica and has since distributed billions of dollars worth of software, including heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto V and the Batman: Arkham collection. The goal has always been clear: capture user accounts and market share from Valve's Steam platform by making the cost of entry zero.
While SunBlockers and NightReaper2 may not carry the same weight as a Rockstar title, their inclusion as "bonus" freebies suggests Epic is continuing to experiment with the cadence of its giveaways. Rather than sticking strictly to the well-known Thursday rotation, these mid-cycle additions keep users checking the client more frequently.
The Preservation Angle
For those interested in game preservation, the exclusivity of SunBlockers is the more notable story here. When a digital game exists solely on one storefront, its long-term availability is tied entirely to the business continuity of that specific company. Claiming the title now ensures you have a license for it, regardless of whether it eventually migrates to other platforms like GOG or Steam.
This is also a reminder of the fragility of digital libraries. A game without a physical release or a DRM-free installer is effectively a long-term rental. However, at the price point of zero dollars, the risk to the consumer is minimal.
Both titles are available to claim until roughly February 27. If you are the type of collector who enjoys watching your "Unplayed" category expand, you have a few weeks to log in and click the button.
