Cotton Reboot! High Tension! launches in the West on PS5, PS4, and Switch
BEEP and Clear River Games' sequel to the 2021 cute 'em up remake is out today, bringing the Over Tension scoring system and Gunbird's Marion to Western consoles.
Cotton Reboot! High Tension! is out today in the West for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, accompanied by a launch trailer that lays out its seven stages, playable roster, and expanded scoring systems. Published by Clear River Games alongside BEEP and SUCCESS, the horizontal shooter arrives in North America and Europe a little over a year after its July 31, 2025 Japanese debut.
We covered the localization back in June when Clear River Games first dated the Western release, and we're excited to play it. I think I own every Cotton game since the TurboGrafx-CD release, which is either a proud archival achievement or a cry for help involving far too much digital candy.
Even though the launch trailer comes via PlayStation's channel and points directly to the PlayStation Store, this isn't a Sony exclusive. Digital versions are available across PS4, PS5, and Switch, while physical editions are landing on PS5 and Switch. Today also happens to be a double bill for the series: Clear River is simultaneously putting out native PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions of the 2021 predecessor, Cotton Reboot!, for anyone who needs to catch up first.

Thirty-five years of chasing candy
The franchise started in Japanese arcades in 1991 with Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams from developer SUCCESS, helping define the "cute 'em up" subgenre alongside Konami's Parodius and TwinBee. Instead of a lone spacefighter pilot saving a galaxy from biomechanical horrors, you control a hot-headed young witch named Nata de Cotton and her fairy companion Silk, who mostly convinces Cotton to fight monsters by promising her magical sweets called Willows.
In 2021, retro publisher and developer BEEP (working with Studio Siesta and Rocket-Engine) revived the property with Cotton Reboot!, a ground-up remake based on the prized 1993 Sharp X68000 computer port of the original arcade game. High Tension! (known in Japan as Kuidaore Night Dreams) isn't another retro port or remaster. It's a direct, original sequel built on the foundations of that 2021 remake, and this time the plot flips the usual script: the Willow candies have gained sentience, taken human form, and started a rebellion against the people who have been eating them for decades.

Crystal chains and Over Tension
Anyone who played the 2021 remake will recognize the core loop of shooting dropped yellow crystals to change their colors, leveling up elemental spells like Fire Dragon, and firing straight through those floating crystals to split shots into dense enemy waves. That refracted-shot mechanic fills a gauge that triggers Willow Fever mode, flooding the screen with high-value point items and colossal damage numbers.
High Tension! builds on that foundation with the Over Tension mechanic. Collecting Willow candy while already in Willow Fever pushes Cotton into an Over Tension state, where enemy bullet patterns get noticeably meaner in exchange for unlocking hidden magic and massive score multipliers. It's a classic risk-versus-reward loop, though I'm curious if the screen clutter ever gets so dense that tracking tiny enemy projectiles behind fifty floating score pop-ups becomes its own boss fight.

Two witches from 1990s arcades
Beyond Cotton and Silk, the roster across the game's seven stages includes returning faces like Wool and Macaron alongside a human-form Willow. The standout addition is Marion, the young witch from Psikyo's 1994 vertical arcade shooter Gunbird, who crosses over as a playable guest fighter.
Marion was originally sold as add-on DLC in Japan, and the Western physical releases on PS5 and Switch include her right on the disc and cartridge. Putting two 1990s arcade witches in the same horizontal shooter makes immediate sense, even if Marion has to turn her broomstick ninety degrees from her usual vertical scrolling habits.
