Bubsy: How Fan Memes 'Bullied' Indie Devs

Indie studio Fabraz shares the bizarre, meme-fueled story of how they ended up developing a Bubsy game, proving that sometimes, fan persistence gets its way.

Bubsy: How Fan Memes 'Bullied' Indie Devs

The Monkey Paw Wish Manifests

Indie studio Fabraz has detailed the rather unconventional path that led them to developing games for the notoriously divisive Bubsy franchise. It turns out, a combination of persistent online fan pressure and a perhaps too-literal childhood wish resulted in them being 'bullied into' taking on the iconic, if often maligned, feline mascot.

Fabian Rastorfer, co-founder of Fabraz, explained in a recent interview that after the announcement of a new Bubsy title, the internet, specifically fans, made their preferences known. "Uh, we didn't, we got bullied into it," Rastorfer stated, a sentiment echoed by his co-founder Ben Miller. The online onslaught was so intense that Rastorfer even posted an edit of the famous Akira meme, pleading for respite from the constant suggestions that Fabraz should tackle the IP.

However, as is often the case with such persistent digital clamoring, the developers had already been secretly considering the possibility. "While of course at the same time, uh, we already we were already talking and sending you a pitch proposal and secretly loving that this might actually become a real thing," Miller confessed. This duality of outward exasperation and inward excitement is a familiar narrative for many indie developers navigating the often-unpredictable currents of fan reception and market opportunity.

Childhood Nostalgia, Deconstructed

For Rastorfer, the involvement with Bubsy also tapped into a deeper, more personal vein of nostalgia. "I did play Bubsy growing up and maybe at some point I made that wish of like I just want to work on a childhood IP," he mused. This sentiment, he admitted, felt akin to a "monkey paw" wish – a desire granted with unforeseen, and perhaps slightly inconvenient, consequences. The franchise, which first debuted on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis in 1993, has had a long and varied history, often marked by critical reception that struggled to match its commercial aspirations.

The developers' journey into the world of Bubsy: Paws on Fire!, the latest installment developed by Fabraz, highlights a unique intersection of fan culture, developer aspiration, and the sometimes-serendipitous nature of game development. It's a reminder that in the digital age, what starts as an online meme can, with enough persistence, become a full-fledged career path. The game itself, released in 2019, aimed to revitalize the series with a more modern gameplay approach and a distinct visual style, a far cry from its 16-bit origins.

The developers, including Jason Polansky (Associate Director of Games at Atari) and Sam Brown (Release Manager at Atari), were all part of the project that ultimately saw the light of day, proving that even a franchise with a complicated legacy can find new life through dedicated development and, apparently, a little bit of fan-driven coercion. It’s a curious case study in how the internet’s collective consciousness can influence the direction of established IPs, turning playful suggestions into tangible projects.
