I am always keeping an eye out for the latest free game drops. Publisher GrabTheGames and developer Tbjbu2 just dropped the price of this title to zero dollars for a strict three-day window.

Basically a standalone Pet Sim

Pet Lands is an incremental clicker adventure built around a very specific gameplay loop. You hatch pets, use them to mine coins, and spend those coins to unlock over 100 different areas. The mechanics are entirely focused on resource gathering and progression gates.

The game is based on the massive Roblox hit Pet Sim. It lifts the core mechanics of that popular title and packages them into a standalone PC release. You start with basic animals, send them to break environmental objects for currency, and use that currency to buy eggs containing rarer animals with better stats. The loop repeats endlessly across different themed biomes.

The transition from a Roblox experience to a standalone Steam game is an interesting trend. Roblox developers operate in a walled garden where the platform takes a massive cut of revenue. Rebuilding those addictive gameplay loops in a standalone engine allows developers to keep a larger share of the profits, even if it means competing in the crowded Steam marketplace.

The development cycle actually happened in two distinct phases. Pet Lands: First Steps, which includes early areas from the full game, was released on September 11, 2024. The complete version followed shortly after on November 25, 2024. Releasing a prologue or "first steps" version has become a standard tactic for indie developers trying to build wishlists before a main launch.

Mixed reviews and asset flips

The reception has been decidedly mixed since that 2024 launch. Players looking for a deep, complex creature collector usually bounce off it quickly. The mechanics are strictly idle and incremental. You click, you wait, your numbers go up, and you move to the next zone.

Tbjbu2 has a reputation among Steam users for releasing games quickly. The developer relies heavily on pre-made store assets, which gives the game a somewhat hollow feel. Paying $15 for an idle clicker built on generic assets is a tough sell for most people. Getting it for free changes the math entirely.

GrabTheGames frequently publishes smaller indie titles and participates heavily in bundle deals and free promotions. They understand that giving away a game for a few days can artificially boost its player count and push it higher in Steam's algorithmic discovery queues.

The PC gaming landscape is flooded with idle games right now. Many of them are free-to-play titles loaded with microtransactions to speed up the timers. Pet Lands avoids the microtransaction route by charging an upfront fee, which makes this temporary free promotion the best way to experience it.

Sometimes you just want to watch numbers go up

I have a soft spot for idle games when I am catching up on podcasts or waiting for a video to render. Pet Lands does not reinvent the genre. It provides exactly the kind of mindless progression that makes clicker games successful. You hatch a blocky dog, it breaks a block of gold, and you buy a slightly better blocky dog.
