Xbox's new postgame recaps are here, will you use it?

Here is something no one asked for: the Xbox PC app now gives you a recap after you finish playing a game. Microsoft announced today that Xbox Insiders in the PC Gaming Preview channel can try "postgame recaps," which pop up after a play session to show you captures you took, achievements you unlocked, and other in-game events. I'm not trying to be cynical. I'm not a streamer. I don't capture. So this just isn't for me. If you are excited for this, I'd love to hear from you. I don't mean to yuck your yum.

The feature runs in the background via the system tray while you play, and Microsoft says it has been optimized to minimize memory and performance impact. Recaps are designed to appear only when they are "useful," which in practice means you are most likely to see one after taking a Game Bar capture or unlocking an achievement. You can toggle individual recap types on or off under Settings > App > Postgame recaps, and opting out of everything stops the Xbox app from launching in the system tray entirely.

The example Microsoft showed was a recap for Grounded 2 that highlighted multiple achievement unlocks, including a rare one, with an option to share the recap with friends through the Xbox app.

Now, here is the part worth paying attention to. Microsoft also mentioned that on your first time playing a game (and "occasionally after that"), you may see "a short check-in and recommendations for other games you might enjoy." So yes, there is a nonzero chance this turns into a polite way for Microsoft to suggest you buy more games. A recap that says "great session!" followed by "hey, have you considered spending $69.99 on this other thing?" is a very specific genre of helpfulness.

That said, a perk is a perk, and I am not complaining. Achievement tracking, automatic session highlights, and a share button for your best moments are all genuinely useful if you care about that stuff. PlayStation has had automatic trophy screenshots for years, but nothing that packages the whole session into a shareable recap like this. It is a small feature, but it is one of those quality-of-life additions that could grow into something worth keeping around.

The feature currently works only with games using Xbox services (Microsoft Store or Xbox app titles with achievements). No Steam, GOG, or Epic Games Store support. Which makes sense. Xbox Insiders can access it through the Xbox Insider Hub app, and it should roll out more broadly once testing wraps up.
