Xbox is getting a Gears of War direct after its June showcase

Microsoft has scheduled the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase for Sunday, June 7 at 10 AM PT. The presentation will be immediately followed by a dedicated Gears of War: E-Day Direct. This gives the prequel its first extended look since its 2024 announcement.

The company is using the event to anchor its 25th-anniversary celebrations. The original Xbox launched in November 2001. Microsoft is bringing back its in-person Xbox FanFest this summer to celebrate the hardware's history and look at upcoming projects from first-party studios.

Game Pass gets crowded

The spring release schedule is packed for April and May. Invincible VS, the 3v3 tag fighter based on the animated superhero series, launches on April 30. An open beta begins earlier in the month on April 9 to test the network infrastructure.

Microsoft is adding a massive wave of titles to Game Pass. NBA 2K26 and Super Meat Boy 3D are joining the subscription service. They are accompanied by Microsoft Bubble and Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. Capcom's first-person horror game originally launched across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017. It received native current-gen upgrades in 2022. It remains one of the strongest entries in the modern survival horror catalog and is a great pull for the subscription library.

The service is also picking up Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition and the strangely titled Space Warlord Baby Trading Simulator. The latter appears to be a follow-up to 2021's Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator. It keeps the chaotic sci-fi market mechanics but swaps the inventory.

Remasters and shooters

The lineup includes several older games getting modern updates. Darksiders Warmastered Edition is receiving a native current-gen release. The 2016 remaster of the original 2010 action game is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles on May 19. The current-gen port includes native 4K rendering and 60 frames per second gameplay.

Third-party support is heavily focused on multiplayer shooters this season. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is in the pipeline. It sits alongside updates for Tom Clancy's The Division 2 and Starship Troopers: Extermination. Embark Studios is also bringing Arc Raiders: Flashpoint to the platform.

Other highlights from the recent partner preview include Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era and Mortal Shell II. The latter is a direct sequel to the 2020 action role-playing game that leaned heavily into the mechanics of Dark Souls.

Microsoft is also running an Assassin's Creed Takeover for its Free Play Days program. The event opens up multiple games in the historical murder simulator franchise to all users for the weekend. Players can download and try the titles without purchasing them outright.

The summer showcase format has worked well for Microsoft in recent years. Tacking a single-game deep dive onto the end of the main presentation allows the company to get into the weeds on mechanics without dragging down the pacing of the broader announcements. Gears of War: E-Day is set fourteen years before the original game. We will see how much of the prequel actually involves chainsaws in June.
