Winlator 11.2 beta fixes gamepad lag and gets Half-Life rendering right
The latest beta for the Android PC translation layer updates Box64 and fixes rendering issues for older OpenGL titles.
Developer BrunoSX has released the Winlator 11.2 beta for Android, bringing Box64 v0.4.4 and a suite of rendering fixes to the PC translation layer. The update is available now on the project's GitHub page.
Winlator launched in 2023 as a way to run x86 and x64 Windows games on ARM-based mobile devices. It uses Wine alongside Box86 and Box64 for dynamic recompilation, translating PC instructions so they work on Android smartphones and tablets. It is a massive project that relies heavily on custom GPU wrappers to get PC graphics pipelines talking to mobile chips.
Fixing the GoldSrc engine
The 11.2 beta makes targeted improvements to Gladio, the wrapper handling older graphics APIs. BrunoSX improved OpenGL 1.X emulation, which means Valve's original 1998 release of Half-Life is now rendering correctly. Half-Life revolutionized narrative storytelling in first-person shooters when it launched on Windows PC, but getting early GoldSrc engine games to display properly on modern ARM hardware requires translating decades-old graphics calls. Gladio now handles active textures much better to accommodate these older titles.
The update also improves ARB vertex and fragment programs. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth relies heavily on these shaders for its PC port, and it now renders correctly under the new beta. The game is a turn-based role-playing title that originally launched on the PlayStation Vita in 2015 before getting a PC release in 2019. Translating a 2019 PC port of a Vita game to run on a 2026 Android phone is exactly the kind of technical stacking Winlator handles.
Samsung GPU support
On the Vortek side, the update fixes texture decoding that was previously mishandling mipmaps. There are also hardware fixes for the Xclipse GPU. Samsung uses AMD RDNA-based Xclipse chips in several of its Exynos processors, and getting PC translation layers to play nicely with them takes constant adjustment. The 11.2 beta adds shader compilation fixes for Xclipse hardware in both the Gladio and Vortek pipelines.
The beta also updates the core recompilation engine to Box64 version 0.4.4. Box64 is the underlying dynamic recompiler that translates x86_64 instructions to ARM64. Updating to this newer build brings upstream compatibility fixes from that project directly into Winlator. Box64 is developed independently, and keeping Winlator synced with its release schedule ensures that newer PC games have a better chance of booting.
The input lag problem
The release notes confirm a fix for gamepad input lag. I think this is the most critical part of the update. Playing PC games on a touchscreen is an exercise in frustration, and relying on a Bluetooth controller only works if the translation layer processes inputs quickly. Most modern Bluetooth controllers connect to Android without issue, but the translation layer adds overhead. Shaving milliseconds off that pipeline is a massive quality of life upgrade for anyone trying to play platformers or shooters.
