Two modern Star Ocean games just hit GOG DRM-free

Square Enix just released Star Ocean: The Second Story R and Star Ocean: The Divine Force on GOG, making both titles available DRM-free for the first time. The two role-playing games arrived on the PC storefront with introductory discounts that run through August 9.

According to GOG, both releases are enrolled in the GOG Preservation Program. This means the storefront guarantees ongoing technical support and maintenance to ensure the games remain compatible with modern operating systems like Windows 11. PC players can download the complete offline installers and run the games without needing a mandatory digital client.

The launch promotion cuts the price of both titles substantially. Star Ocean: The Second Story R is down 50 percent to $24.99. Star Ocean: The Divine Force has a 60 percent discount, bringing it to $23.99.

Getting modern Square Enix releases on a DRM-free platform is a welcome shift. The publisher usually relies heavily on Steam and its associated digital rights management for PC ports. I think having offline installers for massive role-playing games is the best way to ensure they survive long-term storefront changes.

The 1998 PlayStation classic rebuilt

Star Ocean: The Second Story R originally launched in November 2023 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Steam. Developer Gemdrops handled the project, completely rebuilding the 1998 PlayStation original. The studio used a 2.5D visual style that places the original pixel art character sprites inside fully 3D environments.

The remake also overhauled the combat system. It has modernized real-time action mechanics and a re-arranged soundtrack. The original game was already a high point for the franchise, and this visual treatment makes it much easier to play today.

Flight mechanics and dual protagonists

The second game in the GOG drop is Star Ocean: The Divine Force. Tri-Ace developed this sixth mainline entry to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary. It originally came out in October 2022 across the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

The Divine Force introduced full 360-degree traversal. Players can fly around the map and seamlessly transition into high-speed combat. The story follows dual protagonists Raymond and Laeticia, continuing the series tradition of mixing futuristic space exploration with traditional fantasy planets.

Tri-Ace has been making these games since the franchise debuted on the Super Famicom in 1996. The studio was founded by former Wolf Team staff members who wanted to focus on fast-paced action combat instead of traditional turn-based menus. Three decades later, that core design philosophy is still intact across both of these PC releases.
