General Mills and Nintendo have released Super Mario Galaxy Movie-themed editions of Trix and Lucky Charms to grocery store shelves. The promotional boxes are appearing nationwide ahead of the animated film's theatrical debut next month.

According to the packaging details shared by GoNintendo, these aren't just standard cereals stuffed into a different cardboard shell. The Trix variant includes blue raspberry swirls designed to make the standard corn puffs look like planets. Lucky Charms takes a similar thematic approach, swapping out some of its standard lineup for "galactic marshmallows" to match the deep space setting of the upcoming film.

Nintendo has a long, highly specific history with the breakfast aisle. Back in 1988, Ralston Cereals produced the Nintendo Cereal System, a dual-bag box that split its contents between fruit-flavored Super Mario Bros. Pieces and berry-flavored The Legend of Zelda pieces. Ralston Cereals had previously produced a crunchy, barrel-shaped Donkey Kong cereal in 1982. I vividly remember eating both of those as a kid. Against all odds for licensed promotional food, I actually thought both of them were really good. The Zelda side of the box held up surprisingly well in milk. I'm actually shocked I don't have diabetes.

This cereal collaboration is part of a larger marketing push that leaked earlier this year. The film's actual title was first discovered through a leaked product collaboration with Old Spice. Now, the grocery store push is beginning in earnest, with General Mills leveraging two of its oldest brands. General Mills has been producing Trix since 1954 and Lucky Charms since 1964, making them reliable vehicles for massive cross-promotional campaigns.

The original Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1 billion worldwide in 2023, making a massive marketing budget for the sequel an absolute certainty. Nintendo and Illumination are pulling directly from the 2007 Wii classic for this outing. The original Super Mario Galaxy introduced Rosalina, the Lumas, and gravity-bending spherical platforming that fundamentally changed how 3D Mario games operated. It remains one of the highest-rated games in the company's history.

April 1 theatrical debut

Translating that specific cosmic aesthetic into breakfast food is a logical next step for a franchise that has already conquered theme parks and the global box office. The blue raspberry Trix pieces are a particularly nice touch, as the brand usually sticks to its standard six fruit shapes. Modifying the extrusion process just to add planetary swirls shows a bit more effort than the standard licensed cereal cash-in.

While early promotional materials and the initial GoNintendo report pointed to an April 3 release date, the theatrical premiere for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now locked in for April 1, 2026, in the United States.
