Trails in the Sky the 2nd is coming to Switch 2 and PS5 this September

Falcom has set a September 17, 2026, release date for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 2nd. The 3D remake of the RPG sequel will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, the original Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. The game will launch simultaneously across all regions and platforms.

The remake continues the transition from the original 2006 isometric sprites to a modern 3D engine. Estelle and Joshua Bright return in fully updated character models. They clash weapons in cinematic sequences that replace the static dialogue boxes of the original PC and PlayStation Portable releases.

Trails in the Sky SC (Second Chapter) originally launched in Japan for Windows in March 2006. It did not get an English localization until late 2015. XSEED Games eventually brought it to PC and PSP after years of work. The original game has a massive text script. This made it one of the most notoriously difficult localization projects of its era.

The original Trails in the Sky was actually designed as a single game. Falcom had to split the narrative into two parts due to the sheer size of the story and the storage constraints of the time. The first chapter ends on a massive cliffhanger. Players in the West had to wait four years between the English release of the first game in 2011 and the sequel in 2015. The new 3D remakes maintain this two-part structure. The wait between chapters is now exactly one year instead of four.

A modernized orbment system

The Orbment-Quartz menu has a new design. The magic system has been visually overhauled for modern displays to match the engine upgrade. Combat animations also get a major bump in fidelity. The remake uses the Falcom Developer Kit engine. The studio previously used this engine for Trails Through Daybreak and last year's remake of the first chapter. The transition to full 3D allows for seamless exploration and dynamic camera angles during battle sequences.

The massive dragon Regnard appears over a town. The creature is now rendered in full 3D instead of a pre-rendered sprite.

Joshua also appears standing at a grave holding flowers.

Platform transitions

This release follows the September 2025 launch of Trails in the Sky the 1st. Falcom CEO Toshihiro Kondo previously stated that the studio is shifting its development pipeline toward the Switch 2. Kondo noted that the company needs to account for the transition between console generations. He warned that older hardware might be left behind in the coming years. This makes the 2nd one of the first major RPGs confirmed for Nintendo's new hardware alongside the original Switch. The company has explicitly skipped a PlayStation 4 version for this release.

Falcom usually reserves late September for its biggest annual releases. Putting the second half of the Sky duology in that slot makes sense. Players have been waiting to see the conclusion of the Liberl arc in 3D since the first remake dropped last year. The simultaneous worldwide release also shows how far the series has come since the decade-long localization gaps of the PSP era.
