The PlayStation Portal just got a 1080p high bitrate mode

Sony Interactive Entertainment has released a system software update for the PlayStation Portal that adds a higher bitrate 1080p streaming mode. The update rolls out globally starting March 17 and applies to both local Remote Play and cloud streaming sessions.

I genuinely love the Portal. It solves a very specific household problem: my kids can still play the PS5 while someone else uses the living room TV. Since the $199.99 handheld launched in November 2023, Sony has slowly transformed it from a strict local Wi-Fi accessory into a standalone cloud gaming terminal. According to PlayStation's announcement, over half of all Portal owners are now subscribed to the $159.99 per year PlayStation Plus Premium tier.

Pushing more data to the 8-inch screen

The main addition in this patch is the 1080p High Quality setting. By default, the Portal streams at a standard 1080p resolution to match its 8-inch LCD screen. This new toggle pushes a higher video bitrate to the device. Higher bitrates reduce the macroblocking and compression artifacts that often appear during fast camera movements in streamed games.

You have to enable the feature manually. Players need to navigate to the Quick Menu, select Max Resolution, and pick the new 1080p High Quality option. Applying the change requires you to restart your current Remote Play or cloud streaming session.

The device still relies on a Wi-Fi 5 chip. Pushing a higher bitrate through an older wireless standard means you will want a relatively uncongested 5GHz network to avoid stuttering.

Sony claims this mode provides a smooth and high-fidelity experience. The company also shared that cloud streaming engagement on the device jumped 162 percent year-over-year in January. That metric aligns with the timeline of the hardware's capabilities. Sony first enabled cloud gaming access for Premium subscribers in November 2024, and the feature officially rolled out in late 2025. Before that update, the Portal was entirely dependent on a local PS5 console being powered on and connected to the same network.

Platinum trophies get custom animations

The update cleans up several user interface elements that have felt slightly undercooked since launch. Trophy notifications now display the actual name and image of the achievement on the screen. If you unlock a Platinum trophy, the Portal will play a special animation.

Game invites are clearer, and the search function has been streamlined. Selecting specific titles from game bundles is also easier now. Navigating collections or cross-generation bundles on the Portal used to be a clumsy process compared to the native PS5 dashboard.

Sony also added a QR code login method for new users. Instead of typing a password on the touchscreen using the virtual keyboard, you can scan a code with your phone to link a PlayStation account immediately. It is a small change that saves about two minutes of frustration during the initial setup process.

The Portal started as a niche accessory. Continuous software updates have turned it into a surprisingly capable machine, provided your home router can handle the traffic.
