The new Star Wars racing game launches October 6
The underground racing game from ex-Burnout developers finally has a release date and pre-order details.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer is launching on October 6 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Fuse Games and Secret Mode revealed the release date today alongside pre-order details for the upcoming racing title.
The game was initially announced at The Game Awards last December. Fuse Games is a relatively new studio founded by former Criterion Games developers. The team behind the Burnout series is now handling high-speed repulsocraft combat. Several of these developers previously collaborated with DICE on the vehicle combat systems for the modern Star Wars Battlefront games, so they have experience with the hardware.
The underground circuit
This entire project takes me straight back to the massive sit-down Star Wars Racer Arcade cabinet at Dave & Buster's in 2000. Galactic Racer leans into that specific brand of high-speed sci-fi motorsport. It drops the Jedi and the Force entirely to focus on an unsanctioned racing circuit called the Galactic League. The campaign takes place in the Outer Rim during the New Republic era.
Players take control of various vehicle classes. The roster includes speeder bikes, landspeeders, skim speeders, and podracers. Tracks weave through narrow desert canyons and past parked ships like the Millennium Falcon in both first-person and third-person perspectives.
The development team is bringing some interesting mechanics to the track. The game uses a two-level boost system where the second tier activates a jet engine that generates massive heat. Drivers have to interact with the environment to manage their engine temperature. On a volcanic planet like Lantana, players will need to route their path through rivers to cool their engines down before they can boost again.
The game includes a full single-player story campaign where players control a racer named Shade. You can walk around the paddock on foot between races to interact with other characters and take a break from the constant driving. The roster mixes new faces with familiar aliens, including prequel-era racers like Sebulba and Ben Quadinaros. The online multiplayer mode supports up to 12 players in player-versus-player grudge matches.
Pre-orders and editions
Pre-orders are now live across all platforms. The Deluxe Edition includes three exclusive Kor Sarun repulsocraft: the Darc X, Ciza T, and Rak S. It also bundles a Naboo N-1 Starfighter livery, a digital art book, and three unique arcade events.
There is also a physical Collector's Edition available for $159.99. It includes everything from the Deluxe Edition plus a crafted metal model of the Kor Sarun Darc X landspeeder, a racing banner, pilot patches, and a physical copy of the art book.
Fuse Games confirmed this is a traditional premium release. The studio has no plans to add a seasonal pass system. The developers believe post-release battle passes belong in free-to-play games.
Physical copies on PS5 and Xbox Series X come with a steel case. PC players are limited to digital versions via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is the first dedicated Star Wars racing game since Racer Revenge in 2002. That is a 24-year gap I am more than ready to see filled.
