The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is back on modern consoles today

Warner Bros. and Aspyr have shadow-dropped The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition across modern consoles and PC today. The surprise release leaked via SteamDB in late July. It brings the 2011 co-op action RPG back to digital storefronts after a long absence, complete with a new launch trailer.

The original game was developed by Snowblind Studios and launched during the Xbox 360 era. It vanished from PC and console digital stores several years ago. This usually happens when various Middle-earth licensing agreements expire. Now it's back. Aspyr has stepped in to handle this revival.

Aspyr has built a steady business out of resurrecting older licensed games. After spending the last few years bringing classic Star Wars titles and the original Tomb Raider trilogy to modern hardware, they have clearly turned their attention to the Middle-earth catalog.

A bloody trip to Fornost

The launch trailer focuses heavily on the game's core hook: three-player cooperative combat. You play as a parallel fellowship consisting of a human ranger, an elven loremaster, and a dwarven champion. They spend their time fighting Agandaûr, a villain doing Sauron's dirty work up north while Frodo handles the ring down south.

War in the North was notable at launch for being one of the few Lord of the Rings games to embrace a mature rating. The combat is heavy and often bloody. It leans into the brutal reality of fighting orcs and trolls in the northern mountains. The trailer highlights this scale by showing the trio facing off against massive stone trolls in a stormy mountain pass.

The combat relies heavily on action RPG mechanics. Eradan the ranger handles stealth and precision, Andriel provides healing and magic, and Farin acts as the primary tank. The game includes a surprisingly dense loot system for its era. You can customize your hero with specific gear and weapons as you progress through familiar locations like Rivendell and Mirkwood.

The Legacy Edition retains the original's online and split-screen co-op modes. You can still hot-swap between characters in solo play. You can also still summon Beleram the Great Eagle to instantly delete annoying enemies from the sky. It works, which is the nicest thing I can say about getting bailed out by giant birds in Lord of the Rings games.

Available everywhere

The trailer comes from the official Xbox channel, but this isn't an exclusive release. The Legacy Edition is available now across Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC.

When it originally launched in 2011, the game was somewhat overshadowed by the sheer volume of high-profile releases that year. Time has been relatively kind to it. The specific blend of linear, story-driven co-op brawling has largely disappeared from the modern release calendar.

The Xbox store listing confirms it requires Game Pass Core or Ultimate for the online multiplayer components. It is nice to see a delisted licensed game actually make it back over the wall, especially one that still supports local split-screen in 2026.
