Retro Games Ltd. and PLAION are releasing the THEA1200, a full-size replica of the Commodore Amiga 1200, on December 4. The hardware was originally teased in 2023. It made a formal appearance at Gamescom in August 2025. Following some schedule adjustments and a long pre-order window, the system is finally heading to retail shelves just in time for the holidays.

Modern ports on a classic shell

Unlike the miniature consoles that dominated the last decade, the THEA1200 is a full-size machine with a completely functional keyboard. The back panel drops the legacy connectors in favor of modern standards. You get HDMI. It also has USB-C for power and four standard USB ports for peripherals.

The package includes a faithful recreation of the classic Amiga tank mouse alongside a modern precision gamepad. That gamepad is necessary for titles that require faster inputs than a heavy ball mouse can reliably provide.

Workbench and sideloading

The system includes 25 built-in Amiga games. Emulation options include four save slots per game, CRT display filters, and various scaling settings to fit modern televisions.

Beyond the included games, the THEA1200 boots into a full Workbench 3.1 operating system environment where you can run paint programs and utility apps just like the original hardware. If 25 games aren't enough, you can plug a flash drive into one of the rear USB ports to load custom ROMs and disk images.

The original Amiga 1200 launched in 1992. It was Commodore's final major computer release before the company went bankrupt. Seeing it resurrected as a plug-and-play device 34 years later is slightly surreal. It's considerably cheaper than tracking down original hardware and paying someone to recap the motherboard.
