The free Boosted update for Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons arrives next week
Arc System Works is rolling out a major update on August 20, adding new roguelite progression rooms to the 2025 platformer.
Arc System Works is launching the free "Boosted" update for Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons on August 20 across PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5. The publisher posted a final reminder on social media this week, showing the new "Bob's Room" feature that gives players more control over their roguelite dungeon runs.
The update was originally announced back in April as part of the franchise's 40th-anniversary celebration. According to Arc System Works, stepping into Bob's Room lets you pick between three distinct Bonus Gates. You can choose an Item Room to stock up on treasure, a Combo Room to build score multipliers, or a Skip Gate to bypass sections entirely.
40 years of Bub and Bob
Taito released the original Bubble Bobble in arcades in 1986. The cooperative platformer built a massive legacy on its single-screen mechanics, branching secret endings, and an incredibly catchy soundtrack by Taito's in-house band Zuntata. The franchise eventually spawned dozens of sequels and the wildly successful Puzzle Bobble (or Bust-a-Move) spin-off series.
Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons launched in November 2025 as a modern take on the formula. It blends classic arcade movement with procedural level generation, customizable skill bubbles, and candy-themed dungeon crawling. Taito also packed in a full port of the 1997 home console version of Bubble Symphony with the base game.
Bubble Symphony originally hit arcades in 1994 before getting a Sega Saturn port in 1997. It introduced multiple playable characters with different attributes, which laid the groundwork for the varied playstyles you see in Sugar Dungeons today. It is notable that the developers included a legacy title alongside a modern revival, especially since Bubble Symphony hasn't seen many standalone re-releases in recent years.
I will absolutely be using the Skip Gate
The addition of Bob's Room addresses a common friction point in roguelite platformers. Pacing can make or break a run. By letting players choose a Skip Gate, Taito is offering a built-in pressure release valve for runs that are dragging on or when your health is too low to survive another standard floor.
Alternatively, the Combo Room caters to the traditional arcade crowd looking to maximize their score before a boss fight. Roguelites often struggle to balance the needs of survival-focused players with those chasing high scores. Giving players the agency to choose their room type is a smart way to handle it.
The Arc System Works partnership
Arc System Works is best known for high-octane fighting games like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Over the last few years, their publishing arm has been steadily distributing retro revivals and legacy titles in North America and Europe. Partnering with Taito on this project fits right into that strategy. It brings a classic arcade property to modern platforms with new mechanics.
