The first teaser for Godzilla Minus Zero drops on Wednesday

Toho has announced that the first teaser trailer for Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus Zero will premiere on YouTube on April 15 at 7:55 AM Japan Standard Time. The film is a direct follow-up to 2023's Godzilla Minus One and is currently scheduled for a Japanese theatrical release on November 3, 2026.

I spent some time verifying the timeline for this release, as it is easy to confuse with the promotional cycle for the previous film. The original Minus One trailer debuted in April 2023. This new Wednesday premiere is specifically for the sequel, Minus Zero. For viewers in the United States, that 7:55 AM JST Wednesday premiere translates to Tuesday, April 14 at 6:55 PM Eastern (3:55 PM Pacific).

Following up an Oscar winner

Takashi Yamazaki is returning to direct the new project. His work on Minus One earned his team the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2024. He has a history of blending heavy visual effects with established franchises. Before taking on the King of the Monsters, Yamazaki directed the animated Dragon Quest: Your Story in 2019 and Lupin III: The First. His background in visual effects started back in 1986 at Shirogumi, the same animation studio that eventually brought the destruction of post-war Tokyo to life in Minus One.

The previous movie was a massive critical and commercial success. It reset the timeline to post-World War II Japan and focused heavily on human drama alongside the monster destruction. We do not yet know the exact plot details for Minus Zero. The title implies it might push the timeline even further back, or it could deal with the immediate aftermath of the first film's ambiguous ending. The November 3 release date in Japan aligns perfectly with "Godzilla Day," the anniversary of the original 1954 film's theatrical debut.

A 1963 arcade legacy

Movies come up from time to time here when they intersect with gaming culture. Godzilla has been a video game staple almost as long as the medium has existed. The very first Godzilla game hit Japanese arcades in 1963.

Since then, the radioactive lizard has appeared on almost every major console generation. Godzilla: Monster of Monsters! on the NES is a classic side-scroller that pitted the monster against a roster of alien foes. Later, the 3D arena brawler Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee became a high point for the GameCube and Xbox. That game finally nailed the feeling of throwing a 50,000-ton monster through a skyscraper.

Modern gaming has mostly relegated the character to crossover events. We have seen Godzilla appear in games like Fall Guys, PUBG Mobile, and Dave the Diver. A dedicated, high-budget Godzilla game has not hit consoles since the heavily criticized PlayStation 4 release in 2014.

While Toho has not announced any specific video game tie-ins for Minus Zero yet, major cinematic releases for the franchise usually trigger a wave of new digital content. The overwhelming popularity of Yamazaki's interpretation of the monster makes a new standalone game seem more plausible than it has been in a decade.
