The Amiga shmup Apidya' Special is out on modern platforms
Team Apidya's ground-up remake of the 1992 insect shooter is available now on PC, Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.
ININ Games and Team Apidya have released Apidya' Special, a ground-up remake of the 1992 Amiga shoot 'em up, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The digital version launched today for $19.99 across all storefronts.
The game was first announced in August 2025, and the project has been in the works as a collaboration between original creators and retro developers. Originally developed by German studio Kaiko and published by Blue Byte in 1992, the first Apidya stood out in a crowded European home computer market. Instead of piloting a sci-fi spaceship through mechanical corridors, players controlled Ikuro, a man transformed into a magical wasp to fight mutant insects and save his poisoned wife.

The mechanics borrowed heavily from Japanese arcade titans like Gradius, utilizing a similar selectable power-up bar system, but wrapped it in backyards, ponds, and sewer systems. The power-up system requires players to collect flowers left behind by defeated enemies, choosing when to activate speed boosts, alternative shot types, or protective options. It is a demanding system that requires memorization.
They rebuilt it from scratch
This release is not an emulated ROM dump wrapped in a modern menu. Team Apidya, a group that includes original Kaiko developers, rebuilt the game entirely without relying on emulation. The remake uses 24-bit pixel art and actually incorporates visual assets that were originally created for an unreleased console port in the 1990s.
The new engine supports native 16:9 widescreen presentation with enhanced parallax scrolling. I am curious to see how the wider field of view changes the pacing and difficulty of the original levels, since horizontal shooters are usually balanced around a specific screen width. A 4:3 mode with CRT simulation shaders is available for purists who want the original aspect ratio.
Drop-in co-op and new audio tracks
The remake adds a two-player drop-in cooperative mode, which is a major shift from the single-player original. It also introduces randomized stage events, including a night mode that alters the visuals and enemy patterns.
The original Amiga release was famous for its multi-track chiptune score by German composer Chris HĂŒlsbeck. For this release, HĂŒlsbeck returned to provide newly recorded audio tracks and remixes. According to ININ Games, the digital launch gives players a chance to experience the "eye-catchy insect-themed fantasy world" and hear the updated soundtrack on modern hardware.
Physical editions arrive this winter
The PC version is available on Steam, while the console versions are live on their respective digital storefronts. The Xbox release covers both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S hardware. While the digital versions are available now, the planned limited and special physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Switch have been pushed back to winter 2026.
The launch timing aligns directly with Gamescom 2026, which kicks off tomorrow in Cologne, Germany. Team Apidya is hosting a showcase in the retro area of Hall 10.2 to demonstrate the new build to the public. For a game with such deep roots in the German development scene, launching right before the country's biggest gaming convention makes sense.
