TRAILMARK Games is bringing an expanded version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants exclusively to the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4. The digital release will be followed by a physical edition on October 9, with both versions priced at $29.99.

According to the press release from TRAILMARK Games, this new Ninja Edition adds two exclusive playable characters and overhauls the visuals to take advantage of Nintendo's new hardware.

Splinter and Casey join the roster

The biggest addition to the Ninja Edition is the expanded character select screen. Master Splinter and Casey Jones are playable for the first time, joining Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. The game supports solo play and four-player local co-op, letting you mix and match the new additions with the core turtles.

The technical upgrades are a clear step up from the previous console versions. The Switch 2 port targets 1080p resolution in handheld mode and a full 4K output when docked, running at 60 frames per second. The developers also added HDR support, dynamic shadows, anti-aliasing, and new reflection effects. Faster loading times round out the hardware upgrades. It's a noticeable bump in fidelity for a game that originally ran on much older arcade hardware.

From the arcade to the living room

This release is the latest chapter in a surprisingly long rollout. Wrath of the Mutants originally launched as a physical coin-op arcade cabinet in 2017. Developed by Raw Thrills, the company founded by arcade veteran Eugene Jarvis, the cabinet was heavily inspired by the 2012 Nickelodeon animated series. It included voice work from the show's cast, bringing in Seth Green, Sean Astin, Rob Paulsen, and Greg Cipes.

It stayed exclusive to arcades for years before Cradle Games handled the first home console port. That base version was announced in February 2024 and released across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, the original Nintendo Switch, and PC on April 23, 2024. The 2024 port doubled the arcade content by adding three new stages and six boss battles, bringing the totals to six stages and 13 bosses. Players battle across Coney Island and Dimension X on a mission to defeat Shredder.

Cradle Games is based in Quebec and previously developed the sci-fi action RPG Hellpoint. Adapting a Raw Thrills arcade brawler was a pivot from their usual genre, but they've managed to translate the coin-op mechanics into a standard console format.

Raw Thrills arcade cabinets can feel a bit shallow when stripped of their coin slots, but the 2024 port added enough stages to make it a proper home release, and this new edition pushes the hardware further. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has a massive legacy in the beat 'em up genre, dating back to the original 1989 Konami arcade game and the 1991 classic Turtles in Time.

Seeing this newer arcade title positioned as an early Switch 2 release makes sense. It gives early adopters a polished local co-op game right near the launch window. The $29.99 price point is reasonable for a weekend brawler. If the 60 frames per second target holds steady during four-player chaotic moments, it'll be a solid excuse to test out the new Switch 2 controllers.
