Sword Art Online just got a new action RPG where you make your own character

Bandai Namco has announced Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG that launches on July 10, 2026. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. Developed by Game Studio in Unreal Engine, the game takes the franchise back to its original floating castle setting.

Echoes of Aincrad is a darker take on the series' premise. The announcement trailer sets the tone immediately:

Aincrad is in danger. Equilibrium will be lost and the resurrection of the God of Death grows near.

Instead of playing as Kirito or the usual established cast, you create your own custom avatar to survive the original VR death game. Customizing characters was first available in Fatal Bullet. The narrative stakes are straightforward: if you die in the virtual world, you die in real life. You will pair up with an AI partner to explore open-world environments, map out safe zones, and fight bosses.

Custom characters and AI partners

Past games in the series usually focused heavily on the existing anime roster and let players control Kirito and his friends. Echoes of Aincrad shifts the focus entirely to your own custom character. You get to choose your appearance, combat style, and gear from the ground up. You also pick an AI companion at the start of the game. Your relationship with them will unlock new skills and abilities as you progress through the story. You can adapt their tactics and equipment to build a specific team dynamic, which should help when fighting enemies that are stronger and faster than you.

The combat is fast-paced and action-heavy. I have watched some of the Sword Art Online anime, but I have never actually played any of the previous games in the franchise. This one looks genuinely fun, and I just hope the combat leans more toward a fluid hack-and-slash rather than a punishing souls-like. Beating bosses will reward you with materials, which you can then take back to a safe zone to upgrade your existing weapons or craft entirely new ones.

The return to Aincrad

The setting is the original floating castle of Aincrad. The world is divided into different zones that you have to explore and map out manually. Finding safe areas reveals more of your surroundings, and you will need specific items to bypass certain environmental obstacles. The environments are built in Unreal Engine and look noticeably grittier than the bright, colorful aesthetic of previous entries. The exploration involves wandering off the beaten path to uncover rare loot and tackle optional bosses.

Bandai Namco is offering several versions of the game. The base game will be available alongside an $89.99 Deluxe Edition and a $109.99 Ultimate Edition. Pre-ordering any version gets you the Proto-Elucidator Series Weapon Pack, which includes six weapons, shields, and blueprints to get you started.

Death game mode

The Deluxe Edition includes a starter pack with potions and currency, plus immediate access to a "Death Game Mode" without having to unlock it first. The Ultimate Edition throws in digital art books, soundtracks, cosmetic armor packs, and a special anime.

Selling a fast-track unlock for the hardest difficulty mode is certainly a choice. It makes you wonder how many hours of grinding the base game requires just to access that mode naturally. We will find out exactly how punishing Aincrad can be when the game launches this summer.

*Updated to point out that customizations were available in Good catch Fatal Bullet.
