The Switch 2 dock just got a 3D-printed NES makeover

A Reddit user Prestigious_Bed6948 has designed and showcased a set of custom 3D-printed plates that transform the standard Nintendo Switch 2 dock into a miniature replica of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. The project, shared on the r/Switch subreddit, replaces the outer shell of the modern dock with the familiar gray, black, and red color scheme of the 1985 console.

The video demonstration shows the Switch 2 sliding perfectly into the modified dock. The creator nailed the specific two-tone gray plastic look of the original hardware. They even included the ribbed texture on the top ventilation area and the controller port decals on the front face. It is a massive visual upgrade over the standard black dock that ships with the $450 hybrid console.

I have to give the creator massive props for the execution here. The Switch 2 dock is a highly functional piece of hardware, but it lacks the visual character of Nintendo's older machines. The original NES, released in North America in October 1985, looked like a piece of high-end stereo equipment. This custom 3D-printed job brings that exact aesthetic back to the living room.

The Switch 2 launched globally on June 5, 2025. It outputs 4K resolution at 60 Hz when seated in its dock. The contrast between playing a modern 4K game and pulling the console out of a blocky, retro-styled toaster is excellent. Nintendo sold over 60 million original NES consoles, and that boxy design is permanently burned into the brains of anyone who grew up blowing into cartridges.

Time to buy a 3D printer

I want one of these plates on my desk immediately. It looks so good that I am seriously considering if this is the project that finally forces me to buy a 3D printer. I have held off for years because I did not want another hobby that requires constant calibration and troubleshooting. The ability to print custom console shells on demand is a very strong selling point.
