The original ZSNES creators just dropped a brand new emulator

Original ZSNES developers zsKnight and _Demo_ have reunited to release SUPER ZSNES, a completely rewritten Super Nintendo emulator that uses modern GPU acceleration to enhance classic games. I honestly never thought I would type that sentence in 2026. The project is a ground-up rebuild of the software that defined late-90s emulation, and it is available to download right now.
The first great SNES emulator
To understand why this matters, you have to look back at the original ZSNES. Development began in July 1997. Written heavily in x86 assembly language, it was a miracle of optimization. It allowed players to run Super Nintendo games at full speed on weak MS-DOS computers. It was also one of the earliest emulators to successfully handle the various custom enhancement chips Nintendo packed into SNES cartridges.
The software pioneered features we now take for granted, like save states, netplay, and ZMV movie recording. The emulator became open source in 2001, but zsKnight left the project shortly after for personal reasons. While other contributors kept it alive for a few more years, development effectively flatlined after version 1.51 released in January 2007. The emulation scene moved on to highly accurate, cycle-exact projects like BSNES and Higan. ZSNES became a nostalgic relic, mostly remembered for its quirky DOS-style graphical user interface and the falling snow effect in the background.
Moving to the GPU
SUPER ZSNES is not an update to that old assembly code. It is a completely new piece of software. The developers built far more accurate CPU and audio cores to replace the speed-hack-heavy architecture of the original. They promise a return to a "classic development style" with "no vibe coding."
The most significant technical shift is the new GPU-powered PPU core. Classic ZSNES relied entirely on the host processor to draw graphics. The new version offloads the Picture Processing Unit emulation to your graphics card. This hardware acceleration enables high-resolution Mode 7 scaling and provides the overhead needed for a completely new feature set called the Super Enhancement Engine.
The enhancement engine
Instead of just applying generic upscaling filters, the developers are manually enhancing specific games. The engine currently supports seven popular titles: Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Gradius III, F-Zero, Mega Man X, Super Castlevania IV, and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
The enhancements go far beyond basic smoothing. The emulator uses an internal drawing program to render crisp high-resolution details. It applies texture and normal maps to backgrounds. It replaces highly compressed original audio samples with curated uncompressed audio. For perspective-style Mode 7 games, it can actually replace flat 2D tiles with 3D height-mapped data.
My favorite feature is the targeted overclocking. Games notorious for hardware-induced slowdown, like Gradius III, can be overclocked to run smoothly. All of these enhancements can be toggled on or off individually.
Platforms and pricing
The emulator is available now on the official SUPER ZSNES website. The Windows, Mac, and Linux versions are free to download. An Android port is available on Google Play for $2.99, and an iOS version is currently listed as coming soon.
The developers even brought back the classic DOS-style user interface, complete with the falling snow, but modernized it for high-definition displays. It works surprisingly well. Seeing these two programmers return to their passion project nearly three decades later is a bizarre and wonderful surprise.
