There is perhaps no character in cinema history who enjoys hearing the sound of his own voice quite as much as C-3PO. Now, thanks to Stern Pinball, you can pay for the privilege of having a miniature golden droid critique your flipper skills in real time. Stern has announced a new line of accessories for its Star Wars: Fall of the Empire machines, headlined by an animatronic topper that does more than just look shiny.

According to Stern Pinball, the new C-3PO-inspired topper features exclusive animations and call-outs alongside RGB lighting that reacts to gameplay events. While designed primarily for the Fall of the Empire tables, Stern notes that the hardware is also compatible with the company's 2017 Star Wars game. This offers a nice bit of backward compatibility for collectors holding onto older hardware.

Hardware That Unlocks Software

The most interesting aspect of this add-on is how it interacts with the machine's code. Owners of Fall of the Empire who install the topper will gain access to an exclusive "Escape Bespin" challenge mode. Locking gameplay content behind physical accessories is a specific kind of DLC that only the arcade world can really get away with, but it adds tangible value to the plastic figure sitting on top of the backbox.

For those who feel their game room isn't quite blinding enough, Stern also revealed the Cabinet Expression Lighting System for the Premium Edition. This setup utilizes 96 intelligent RGB LEDs positioned in pockets cut into the cabinet sides. The system synchronizes with game events to provide full-spectrum illumination and features exclusive hand-drawn artwork depicting the Battle of Hoth.

Completing the Look

The accessory lineup is rounded out by several cosmetic updates for the Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition models. These include a stormtrooper-themed shooter knob, speaker lighting kits, and "Fall of the Empire" side armor. The side armor features a gloss black powder coat and a laser-cut logo backing, designed to protect the cabinet from the wear and tear of enthusiastic play.

Stern also introduced new Art Blades for the interior of the cabinet. These decals are easy to install and provide a continuous artistic theme from the playfield to the cabinet walls. It is a small detail, but one that hides the raw wood usually visible when peering down at the flippers.

These upgrades arrive as Stern continues to support its licensed tables well after their initial release. While pinball remains an expensive hobby, the ability to add mechanical and software features to existing machines helps keep the hardware feeling relevant a few years down the line.
