Spark in the Dark just launched on GOG Early Access

Stellar Fish's dark fantasy dungeon crawler Spark in the Dark just launched on GOG's Early Access program. The PC and Mac release arrives a few weeks after the game's initial Early Access debut on Steam in early April. This gives DRM-free advocates a way to jump into the punishing depths.

The game throws players into an endless, procedurally generated subterranean ruin. It leans heavily into survival horror mechanics, punishing combat, and a pervasive sense of dread. You spend most of your time managing scarce light sources while trying not to get ambushed in the dark.

Keeping the lights on

The core loop relies on balancing visibility against vulnerability. Lighting a torch or a central room lamp reveals your surroundings, but it also alerts whatever is crawling around in the next corridor. The developers at Stellar Fish built the entire combat system around this claustrophobic tension.

When you are swarmed by giant spiders in a narrow corridor, you cannot simply button-mash your way out. The combat demands spatial awareness. Weapons hit the walls if you swing too wide in a tight space. Shields lose durability with every blocked attack, and hammers degrade as they smash through armor. The game tracks individual wounds, and the UI constantly reminds you of your deteriorating physical state.

You choose from five different character classes. Every single one is forced to deal with the same brutal stamina management and weapon degradation. Every swing of a two-handed hammer or thrust of a spear requires commitment. Make a mistake, and the permadeath system ensures you start over from the top.

Patching up at camp

Between fights, you have to manage your physical and mental state. Finding a secure room allows you to set up camp, build a fire, and patch up injuries.

Resting is an active process. The camp screen is a hub for preparation. Here, you can repair gear and craft supplies before pushing deeper into the ruins. But even sleep carries risks. The game includes a dream system where your character can suffer from nightmares, which negatively impact your stats upon waking. You can drink alcohol to alter the nightmare chance, but that comes with its own set of debuffs.

The dungeon itself is filled with hidden passages and environmental storytelling. Bookshelves slide away to reveal hidden alcoves, and checking the wrong chest can trigger a deadly trap. You are not the first person to descend into these depths. The floors are littered with the skeletal remains of previous adventurers. Examining their corpses often yields a few rusted coins or a torn journal page. These scraps of lore hint at the ancient civilization that built the ruins long before humanity existed.

Three years of testing

Stellar Fish has been working on this project for over three years. Early builds surfaced during Steam Next Fest back in October 2022. The studio spent the following years iterating on public demos through platforms like itch.io. That extended testing period helped shape the current survival mechanics.

Now that the game is in Early Access, the studio is moving from building the foundation to expanding the content. The developers are currently focused on fleshing out the second and third tiers of the dungeon, known as Dargroth. They are also actively adjusting the difficulty curve. Recent patch notes mention adding enhanced auto-attacks for one-handed weapons and fixing issues where players would get permanently stuck in spider webs after resurrecting.

Stellar Fish plans to keep the game in Early Access for the next two to three years. The development roadmap points toward deeper tiers, more enemy types, and refined balance based on player feedback.

Most modern action RPGs want you to feel powerful. Spark in the Dark seems entirely content with making you feel like prey. It is a slow, methodical grind where surviving another ten minutes feels like a genuine victory.
