Sony Interactive Entertainment is making two massive changes to how you buy games. Starting in January 2028, the company will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation releases. On top of that, the digital storefronts for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita are shutting down over the next year.

It's amazing how much bad news Sony is delivering today. They announced the end of a digital store on the same day they announced the end of physical games. Thus proving everyone's point that physical games are needed because digital stores close!

The shift away from physical media has been happening for years, but a hard cutoff date is new. Sony confirmed that any new game releasing on a PlayStation console after January 2028 will be digital-only. You will only be able to buy them through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes at retail.

This does not affect games released before that date. If a game gets a physical disc print run in 2027, those discs will still exist and work. Sony claims this is a natural direction to adapt to consumer trends. Industry data backs that up. Digital sales accounted for roughly 80 percent of full-game sales for PlayStation in recent financial reports. When the PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, digital sales were under 10 percent.

The used game market will fundamentally change for PlayStation hardware. Without physical discs for new releases, players cannot trade in finished games, lend them to friends, or buy them secondhand at a discount. Retailers will have to rely entirely on the pre-2028 catalog of physical media and merchandise.

A staggered shutdown for legacy hardware

The other half of the news impacts hardware that is already out of production. The PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita is closing, and the rollout happens in phases.

The first closures happen next month. In August 2026, the PS3 store will go offline in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries will lose access in late 2026. For everyone else, the PS3 and PS Vita storefronts will shut down globally in July 2027.

Sony cited updated payment processing standards and modern commerce systems as the reason for the closure. The aging PS3 and Vita hardware apparently cannot support these backend updates at the required level. Once the store closes in your region, you will not be able to buy new digital games or DLC. You will still be able to download previously purchased content for the foreseeable future.

Two decades of the Cell processor

The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006. It was a notoriously difficult console to develop for thanks to its unique Cell Broadband Engine architecture, but it was also the birthplace of the modern PlayStation Network. The digital storefront was a massive part of that ecosystem. The PlayStation Vita followed in late 2011. It brought dual analog sticks and an OLED screen to the handheld market.

Both consoles have been out of active production for a long time. The Vita was officially discontinued in 2019, and the PS3 ended its run in 2017. The digital stores staying online this long allowed players to access a massive back catalog of PS1 classics, digital-only indie games, and DLC that never received a physical release.

Many PS1 and PS2 Classics are available for purchase or via the PS Plus Premium Classics Catalog on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. When the storefront goes dark, games that never made the jump to the PS4 or PS5 backward compatibility program will become inaccessible to new buyers.

With the 2028 cutoff for new physical discs looming, the entire PlayStation ecosystem is moving toward a model where Sony controls the only point of sale.
