Sonic 1 and 2 are getting new $100 Genesis cartridges

Sega and iam8bit are celebrating Sonic's 35th anniversary with fully playable, premium physical Genesis releases of the first two games.

Sega and iam8bit are releasing fully playable physical Sega Genesis cartridges of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for $99.99 each. The 35th-anniversary re-releases are available for pre-order now and are designed to run directly on original NTSC Genesis hardware.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog launched in the summer of 1991. It established Sega's foothold in the 16-bit console market and gave the Genesis a mascot fast enough to compete with Nintendo's platformers. The 1991 release was a technical showcase for the Motorola 68000 processor inside the Genesis, proving the console could handle high-speed scrolling without the severe sprite flicker that plagued older systems.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 followed in November 1992. Developed by the Sega Technical Institute, the sequel introduced Miles "Tails" Prower, the spin-dash mechanic, and the pseudo-3D half-pipe special stages. The sequel pushed the hardware limits further with its split-screen multiplayer mode, a feature that notoriously caused massive framerate drops but remained a staple of multiplayer gaming anyway.

Both games have been ported to nearly every piece of consumer electronics manufactured in the last three decades. You can play them on a modern console, a smartphone, or a smartwatch. These new releases bypass modern hardware entirely. They target collectors who still have a CRT television and a working Sega console hooked up in their living room.

Amber shells and orange clamshells

The packaging leans heavily into the early 1990s aesthetic. According to the product listing for the first game, each $100 package includes a translucent "Two Tail Amber" cartridge shell. The games ship in orange clamshell cases decorated with premium foil embellishments. Jango Snow Art & Design handled the packaging restoration and custom design work.

Buyers also get a full-color instruction booklet with restored artwork and a new foreword, plus unspecified retro pack-in surprises. Retrotainment Games is handling the physical manufacturing of the boards and shells. That studio is well known in the aftermarket scene for developing new titles like Full Quiet specifically for original 8-bit hardware.

A 12.5 percent chance of glowing

The most interesting detail is a randomized variant. One in eight cartridges is infused with "Chaos Emerald energy," which means the cartridge actually glows. The translucent exterior houses an inner glow mechanism. I am fully aware that $100 is a steep asking price for a game I already own on six different platforms, but the glowing plastic gimmick is incredibly effective.

Both the first game and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 share the exact same pricing, packaging materials, and randomized glow variant chance. The cartridges are strictly formatted for NTSC Genesis consoles, so PAL Mega Drive owners will need a region bypass or a modified system to play them.

Because physical cartridge manufacturing requires specialized assembly, iam8bit is shipping the pre-orders in three distinct waves based on when customers secure their copies. The first batch of orders will ship in the third quarter of 2026. The second wave follows in the fourth quarter, and any remaining orders will slip into the first quarter of 2027. Customers are limited to two copies per game to prevent immediate scalping.

This kind of premium physical production has become iam8bit's primary business model. After spending years popularizing high-end vinyl soundtrack releases, the company has increasingly moved into manufacturing actual playable cartridges for legacy systems.
