Cyberwave and rokaplay are bringing their floating-island survival game Solarpunk to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on June 8, 2026. The two-person development team at Cyberwave spent the last few years building out the project after a massive Kickstarter campaign in 2023. That initial crowdfunding push pulled in over $330,000.

The game drops players onto a series of lush islands suspended high above the clouds. Survival here is less about fending off zombies and more about managing renewable energy sources to power an automated farm. It is a stark contrast to the grim, punishing mechanics usually associated with the survival genre. You will not die of starvation while hiding from mutants in a cave. Instead, you might just have a slightly inefficient water recycling system.

Players travel between landmasses in customizable airships. You can build these vessels from scratch and upgrade them as you gather better materials.

The cockpit view looks straight out of a retro-futuristic novel. The exhaust is clean and the destination is a floating waterfall. Once on land, the core loop revolves around base building and resource management. The developers built the game using Unreal Engine 5. It shows in the lighting model and the density of the foliage on each island.

You can build a cozy house with large windows that overlook your wind turbines. The aesthetic leans heavily into the actual solarpunk literary concept. It blends modern comforts with sustainable technology. The architecture mixes natural wood tones with sleek glass and clean metal surfaces.

Chores, but in the sky

Players use an energy crafting table to fabricate solar panels, windmills, and algae drones.

These tools automate the farming process. They keep your crops watered while you fly off to explore neighboring islands. The survival mechanics focus entirely on ecological balance and automation. Instead of chopping down an entire forest to build a wooden box, you set up water catchers and solar arrays to power your gadgets.

Resource gathering requires a bit more thought than just hitting a rock with a pickaxe. You have to wire your energy grids properly. If you place a windmill behind a large building, it will not catch the breeze. Solar panels need direct sunlight to function at peak capacity. You have to balance your power draw against your generation capabilities to keep the automated farm running smoothly.

It is a much more relaxed take on the genre. You can play solo or bring up to three friends along in co-op mode to split the workload. Up to four players can work together to build a shared sanctuary. Cross-play is not supported at launch, so you will need to coordinate platform choices with your group.

The long road to launch

Cyberwave is a small studio based in Germany. They took the game to Kickstarter in May 2023 with a modest goal of around $32,000. They ended up raising ten times that amount from over 6,000 backers. The extra funding allowed them to expand the scope and secure a simultaneous multi-platform release. The publisher, rokaplay, stepped in to help manage the logistics of shipping a game on four different platforms on the same day.

While the PlayStation announcement only mentioned the PS5, the game is a simultaneous multi-platform launch. It is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo's next console on the exact same day. The PC version will be available across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.

We see a lot of cozy farming games right now. Most of them stick you in a dusty valley with a broken-down inherited farm. Putting the whole operation thousands of feet in the air is a nice change of scenery. Let us just hope the algae drones have good pathfinding.
