Sokka is joining the Avatar fighting game roster this July
The boomerang guy is officially coming to Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. Plus, we finally have a July release date for the 2D fighter.
Sokka is officially joining the roster of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game when it launches on July 2. We finally get to see exactly how a guy with no magical bending abilities holds his own against people who can throw fire and rocks.
His moveset relies heavily on his club and signature boomerang. He uses the boomerang as a projectile to extend combos and control space. This allows him to keep his distance from close-range brawlers or interrupt their attacks. His "Secret Technique" special move makes an appearance, along with some quick cinematic clashes against Zuko and Toph.
He spent the original animated series using his wits to survive encounters with overpowered benders. That translates directly into his fighting game toolkit. Instead of shooting elemental blasts, he relies on physical strikes, weapon hitboxes, and well-timed weapon tosses. The developers at Gameplay Group International leaned into his comedic personality. They kept his sarcastic voice lines and frantic energy intact throughout the match footage.
The boomerang meta
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a 1v1 2D fighter with hand-drawn animation. The standard edition costs $29.99 and includes rollback netcode along with full crossplay. The launch roster ships with 12 characters. The game also has support characters that alter your overall fighting style and grant access to different special moves.
The combat relies on a movement-centric "Flow System." This is designed to capture the fluid martial arts styles seen in the animated series. You can also expect the usual suite of fighting game modes: a single-player story campaign, arcade mode, combo trials, and an art gallery.
The $29.99 standard edition covers the base game and the initial roster. PM Studios is also releasing a $49.99 Deluxe Edition. That version includes a digital art book, the game's soundtrack, unique interface options, and a Year 1 Pass. The pass promises five additional characters and extra color palettes down the line. Anyone who pre-orders the game gets a Samurai Appa support character skin and exclusive colors.
Revived from the ashes
The fact that this game is coming out at all is a minor miracle. The project originally started at Swedish publisher Maximum Entertainment. It was quietly canceled in early 2024 according to financial reports from the company.
Gameplay Group International stepped in to pick up the pieces. The studio was founded by Victor Lugo, a former lead designer at Iron Galaxy who previously worked on Killer Instinct. They revived the fighter in partnership with publisher PM Studios and brought the project over the finish line.
Lugo's experience brings some serious fighting game pedigree to the table. The development team built the game to prioritize competitive integrity. They implemented proprietary rollback netcode to ensure online matches feel responsive. The full crossplay support means the player base will not be fragmented across different console ecosystems.
PlayStation's YouTube channel naturally only mentions the PS5 version in their video. The game is actually a broad multiplatform release. You can expect to play it on Xbox Series X and S, PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Switch 2.
Fighting games always need a character who relies entirely on ordinary objects and sheer panic to survive against literal gods. Sokka fills that archetype perfectly. We will see how his cactus juice strategies hold up against the rest of the cast in a couple of months.
