Actraiser Renaissance is a 2021 remake of the 1990 Super Nintendo classic that blends side-scrolling action with city-building simulation. You play as the Lord of Light, clearing out monsters in traditional platforming stages before switching to a top-down view to guide humans in building a civilization. The remake adds new magic, new bosses, and an entirely new region called Almodot. Original composer Yuzo Koshiro even returned to arrange the soundtrack and write new music. WayForward's 2009 puzzle-platformer A Boy and His Blob is a reboot of the David Crane NES original with excellent hand-drawn animation. It is a cozy, clever game built around feeding jellybeans to a shape-shifting companion. Different flavors transform the blob into useful tools like a ladder, a trampoline, or an anvil to solve environmental puzzles. WayForward completely overhauled the punishing difficulty of the 8-bit version and even included a dedicated hug button. Team Ninja's 2017 samurai action game Nioh: Complete Edition combines Dark Souls mechanics with fast-paced, stance-based combat. Square Enix's 2021 sequel NEO: The World Ends with You trades the dual-screen touch controls of the cult classic Nintendo DS RPG for 3D action in modern Shibuya. Instead of the pin-based touch combat of the original, you control a whole party of characters simultaneously by assigning different psych abilities to different controller buttons. The graffiti-inspired art style and heavy rock soundtrack match the energy of the first game, and the new combat system translates well to a standard controller. It is currently sitting at $17.99, which is 70 percent off the standard $59.99 MSRP.
