Sigma Star Saga DX is coming to modern platforms this April
The 2005 top-down RPG and side-scrolling shooter hybrid is getting a modern port with some much-needed quality of life improvements.
WayForward has announced an April 7 release date for Sigma Star Saga DX. The modern port brings the 2005 Game Boy Advance title to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. The release is a joint effort with Limited Run Games. It runs on the publisher's Carbon Engine. Mighty Rabbit Studios handled the porting duties.
Released exactly two decades ago, Sigma Star Saga was WayForward's second fully original game after Shantae. It has a bizarre but ambitious mechanical hook. Half the game operates as a top-down exploration RPG where you wander planets and talk to NPCs. The other half is a side-scrolling space shooter.
The more I play GBA games on a big screen, the more I realize it might have the most beautiful games of any systems.
The story follows Ian Recker, a decorated Earth pilot who goes undercover as a double agent to infiltrate the alien Krill empire. The Krill previously attacked Earth by gouging a hole the size of Canada under the Atlantic Ocean. To blend in, Recker is outfitted with a Krill parasite suit. This biological armor makes him stronger and allows him to pilot the aliens' living ships.
As Recker explores various planets, the game uses random encounters. Instead of transitioning to a turn-based battle screen, Recker is beamed into a random Krill fighter ship for a brief shoot-'em-up sequence. The ship you get is randomized. You have to adapt to different firing patterns and movement speeds on the fly. Defeating enemies in these sections grants experience points to level up Recker's base stats.
A much-needed tune-up
The original GBA cartridge has become notoriously expensive on the secondhand market. Price was not the only barrier to entry for curious players. Sigma Star Saga had some rough edges. The random encounter rate was aggressive enough to test the patience of a saint, and the save points were frustratingly sparse.
WayForward is addressing those exact issues with the DX release. The modern port includes a decreased random encounter rate, rebalanced experience gain, refined dialogue, and additional save points. It also adds an improved map interface and HD border artwork to fill the modern widescreen aspect ratio.
The narrative leans heavily into a love triangle between Recker and two companions. Psyme is a Krill pilot who distrusts humans, and Scarlet is a human scientist trying to survive the war. Recker has to maintain his cover with the Krill forces while secretly working to sabotage their operations from the inside.
The WayForward archives
The game includes over 70 different "Gun Data" items that let players customize their ship's weaponry. This allows for thousands of potential combinations. You will need them to deal with the game's elaborate pixel-art bosses. These massive enemy encounters show off the detailed sprite work and animation style that eventually became WayForward's signature.
Physical editions for the PlayStation 5 and Switch will be distributed through Limited Run Games. The digital version will be available on the PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, and Steam.
WayForward built its modern reputation on games like River City Girls and the later Shantae sequels. Sigma Star Saga is a look back at the studio's earlier, experimental years. They were still figuring out how to cram two entirely different genres onto a 32-megabyte cartridge. It works, which is a minor miracle of GBA development.
