Sega Amusements International has revealed the full cabinet design and hardware specifications for House of the Dead Reawakened, giving a first look at the physical machine before it hits the show floor next month. The project was first teased at the end of September, marking the long-running rail-shooter series' first jump into virtual reality. Detailed by Arcade Heroes, the machine is styled like a theme park attraction and is built to celebrate the franchise's upcoming 30th anniversary.

Rather than sticking players in a standard plastic booth, Sega built a massive Gothic manor facade that measures 110 inches tall, 106 inches wide, and 57 inches deep. It has animated lighting, a working clock tower at the top, and an integrated jump-scare reveal. Because nobody wants to stand around watching two people flail blindly in headsets, the front of the enclosure houses an 85-inch central attract display flanked by dual 43-inch viewing monitors for spectators.

The cabinet borrows its overarching physical concept from Sega's earlier 2022 VR arcade shooter, VR Agent, pairing tethered headsets with physical light guns that have haptic feedback and 2.1-channel audio per player. The headsets themselves are commercial-grade DPVR E4C units with magnetic autocalibration. What will actually matter to arcade operators, though, is how those headsets stay attached to the machine.

Public arcade cabinets take a beating, and VR setups are notorious maintenance headaches because panicked players yank on the wires until they snap, sometimes within 90 days of installation. Sega's solution here is a custom stainless-steel armored cable harness that has been load-tested to 286 pounds (130 kg) and backed by a 12-month warranty. It's a funny thing to highlight on a spec sheet, though any operator who has watched a teenager try to physically sprint away from a virtual zombie will probably appreciate the overengineering.

On the software side, House of the Dead Reawakened runs on Unreal Engine 5 and is positioned as a direct follow-up to 2018's House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn, which ran on Unreal Engine 4. Players can tackle three missions in solo or co-op mode, using different weapons to clear out crowds of creatures.

"With the franchise's 30th anniversary just around the corner, this means a great deal to us. The House of the Dead brand has defined horror gaming for a generation, and reawakening it like this, for the very first time, felt like the only way to do that legacy justice."

That quote comes from Sega Amusements International CEO Siraj Elkhawad, and the timing lines up with the series' original rollout. Created by Takashi Oda and Atsushi Nishiyama, the original The House of the Dead debuted in Japanese arcades in late 1996 on Sega Model 2 hardware before launching internationally in 1997. It helped codify fast-moving zombies, localized limb damage, and branching stage routes across five mainline arcade entries and spin-offs like 1999's The Typing of the Dead and 2009's House of the Dead: Overkill.

What remains unclear from the trailer is whether the classic B-movie voice acting survives the jump to Unreal Engine 5. The series has always been at its best when its horror is delivered with the cadence of someone reading a cue card for the first time, and it'd be a shame if a fancy new VR engine made everything too serious.

House of the Dead Reawakened is strictly an arcade release with no home console or PC VR ports announced. The cabinet will make its playable public debut at the IAAPA Expo 2026 in Orlando, Florida, which runs from November 17 to November 20 at the Orange County Convention Center, while broader arcade distribution and pricing are expected to follow in early 2027.
