30 year old tactical RPG The Legend of Fancy Realm is getting a Steam remake
Userjoy Technology just dropped a new trailer and playable demo for the modern PC overhaul of the classic 16-bit strategy game.
Userjoy Technology has released a new gameplay trailer and playable demo for The Legend of Fancy Realm Remake, bringing the classic PC tactical RPG to modern audiences. The update, which follows the game's initial reveal late last year, showcases the overhauled 2D combat system and updated character portraits.

The official trailer highlights the visual jump from classic PC hardware to modern high-resolution sprites. It is a ground-up rebuild rather than a simple filter over old assets. The environmental spell effects and cut-in skill animations have been completely redrawn, but the underlying grid-based strategy mechanics remain intact.
I think the new art direction strikes a good balance between modernizing the visuals and keeping the original proportions readable on a tactical map.
Grid combat and combo kills
The original PC release built a dedicated following through its deep mechanical systems. Set on the fantasy continent of Faluosion, the game tasked players with navigating a post-war landscape inhabited by humans, elves, winged folk, beastmen, and amphibians. It relied heavily on free-point attribute allocation and a branching job-class promotion system. Those core elements are returning, along with the game's signature combo-kill experience multiplier.
According to the official website, the remake preserves the original's emphasis on tactical positioning over endless grinding. The combo system rewards players who chain enemy defeats with a single character by funneling bonus experience points to them, accelerating their progression through the class tiers. The terrain and chokepoints dictate the flow of battle, requiring careful management of unit formations.
Userjoy Technology, originally founded as Odin Technology in 1995, released the classic title on DOS and Windows platforms in the late 1990s and has a long history with strategy and role-playing games. Bringing this classic PC title forward to modern computers requires completely rethinking the user interface, which the new footage demonstrates with clean, mouse-friendly menus replacing the old commands.
A traditional release model
The tactical RPG genre has seen a massive resurgence on PC recently, with both indie spiritual successors and official remakes finding eager audiences. This remake fits neatly into that trend, offering a localized version of a game that many Western players missed during its original PC run.
Userjoy Technology is targeting a broad range of PC hardware for the release. The Steam store page lists an Intel Core i5-4400 and a GTX 750 as the minimum requirements, meaning you can probably run this on a laptop from a decade ago. It works, which is the nicest thing I can say about my own aging secondary PC.
The developer has confirmed the game will launch as a standard buy-to-play release with no microtransactions or live-service elements. This is a straightforward update of the single-player campaign, now featuring full Chinese voice acting for the story sequences.
The game includes text support for Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean. The playable demo is live today, giving strategy fans a chance to test the new interface and combat pacing. The full version is scheduled to launch before the end of 2026.
