Sega announces House of the Dead Reawakened for VR arcades
Sega Amusements is bringing its classic rail-shooter franchise to virtual reality with a massive new attendant-free arcade cabinet running on Unreal Engine 5.
Sega Amusements has announced House of the Dead Reawakened, a new two-player virtual reality arcade attraction debuting at IAAPA Expo 2026. The company released a 30-second teaser video showing a shadowed glimpse of a Gothic manor cabinet design and confirmed the game will run on Unreal Engine 5.
The announcement marks the first new arcade entry for the franchise since House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn in 2018. According to Arcade Heroes, Sega quietly published a placeholder page for the game on its official site before pulling the details.

The VR hardware setup

Reawakened is built as an attendant-free VR cabinet, designed to lower operational overhead for arcades and family entertainment centers. The physical footprint is massive. The cabinet features an 85-inch center display flanked by two 43-inch vertical side screens, all housed within a specialized Gothic manor facade complete with automated door displays.
Players interact using tethered VR aiming headsets and gun controllers. Sega Amusements previously tested this specific hardware approach with 3MindWave on the 2022 release VR Agent. I am curious to see how those tethered cables hold up in practice. House of the Dead usually requires frantic aiming to catch off-screen zombies, and managing a wired headset during a boss fight seems like a recipe for tangled cords.
The move to Unreal Engine 5 is a step up from Scarlet Dawn, which ran on Unreal Engine 4. The teaser promises a visual overhaul, though the brief footage mostly focuses on the physical cabinet rather than direct gameplay capture.
Thirty years of arcade horror
The House of the Dead franchise is approaching its thirtieth anniversary. Sega AM1 (later Wow Entertainment) launched the original game in Japanese arcades in September 1996 on the Sega Model 2 hardware. It defined the modern rail-shooter genre with fast-moving undead, branching paths, and notoriously campy voice acting.
The original 1996 game relied on optical sensors reading the scanlines of a CRT monitor. That technology is long gone, and arcade manufacturers have spent the last fifteen years trying to replicate that precise feel with infrared cameras and accelerometers. VR offers a completely different solution to the aiming problem by tracking the headset and controllers in 3D space.
Over the decades, the series moved through the Sega NAOMI hardware with The House of the Dead 2, saw console spin-offs like The Typing of the Dead, and eventually returned to high-end arcade installations. Reawakened represents the first time the mainline arcade series has fully committed to virtual reality. The rail-shooter format is a natural fit for VR, as the fixed movement removes the motion sickness issues that plague free-roaming VR shooters.
The upcoming IAAPA debut
The full reveal and playable debut are scheduled for IAAPA Expo 2026, which runs from November 16 to November 20 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The trade show is the primary battleground for commercial arcade hardware.
Sega will not be the only company bringing zombies to the show floor. Bandai Namco is scheduled to show off Resident Evil 2: Arcade at the same event. The two rival light-gun attractions will be competing directly for floor space in arcades next year.
Pricing and release dates for the final cabinet are not yet available. High-end VR arcade installations are traditionally expensive, and Reawakened is expected to carry a premium price tag when it eventually ships to operators.
