Scott Pilgrim EX is getting a physical release and a new vinyl soundtrack

iam8bit is bringing Tribute Games' Scott Pilgrim EX to physical media on August 28 for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The boutique publisher opened pre-orders today for an Exclusive Edition of the brawler alongside a two-disc vinyl soundtrack.

Scott Pilgrim EX launched digitally in March 2026. The game acts as a sequel to the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime and a spiritual successor to the 2010 Ubisoft beat 'em up. Tribute Games reunited the original creative team for this project. Series creator Bryan Lee O'Malley wrote the new story, Paul Robertson returned to direct the pixel art, and Anamanaguchi composed the soundtrack.

The physical package

The standard digital game lets players control seven characters as they fight through a futuristic Toronto. The roster includes Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Roxie Richter, Lucas Lee, Matthew Patel, Gideon Graves, and Robot-01. The story drops these fighters into a turf war controlled by factions of Vegans, Robots, and Demons. Combat relies on arcade brawler mechanics mixed with light role-playing elements. Players earn coins to buy stat upgrades and equip badges that unlock new abilities. The campaign supports local and online cooperative play for up to four players. The drop-in system lets friends join the fight at any point in the story.

The new iam8bit Exclusive Edition puts that game on a disc or cartridge with a few physical extras. Buyers get an exclusive O-Sleeve slipcover and a fold-out double-sided poster. The poster art highlights the game's playable cast. The physical release follows a positive critical reception. Outlets like Insider Gaming and DualShockers awarded the game nines across the board upon its digital launch.

One platform is notably absent from the iam8bit store. Limited Run Games previously offered a standard Xbox physical version during an open pre-order window. iam8bit is only producing PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch versions for this Exclusive Edition. The digital version remains available on all major platforms, including PC.

New music on wax

The other half of the announcement focuses on the game's music. iam8bit partnered with Polyvinyl Records to press Anamanaguchi's original score onto a two-disc vinyl set. The soundtrack spans 71 tracks recorded at Valve Studios in Dallas with producer Casey di Iorio.

The vinyl release uses a tri-color variant design. It ships in a deluxe gatefold jacket with original album art. Tribute Games provided the pixel art for the packaging, and Jacob Ferguson handled the album design.

Anamanaguchi has a long history with the franchise. The band composed the music for the 2010 game and returned for the recent Netflix series before tackling this new 2026 release. Their work on Scott Pilgrim EX blends their traditional chiptune sound with garage rock elements. The band received nightly builds of the game during development. This let them adjust the music to fit the pacing of specific levels. The process gave them more direct control over the audio implementation than they had on previous projects.

Physical editions of modern beat 'em ups have become standard practice for Tribute Games. The Montreal studio previously partnered with distributors for physical runs of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge and Mercenary Kings. Buying the music on physical media requires a bit more urgency. The iam8bit vinyl set does not follow an open pre-order window and has a strict quantity limit before the Q3 2026 shipping date.
