Rover's Tale is a new metroidvania about dead dogs exploring space
I'm not crying, you are! Observer Interactive and Team17 are turning the heartbreak of losing a pet into a sci-fi adventure coming to PC and consoles in 2026.
I'm not crying, you are!
Team17 and developer Observer Interactive have announced Rover's Tale. The creature-collecting metroidvania will launch on PC and consoles in 2026.
The premise is an emotional gut punch. The game takes the hardest part of having a dog and turns it into a sci-fi adventure. When a canine reaches the end of its natural life, a fictional initiative called the LAIKA Programme transfers the animal's consciousness into a robotic rover. Instead of dying, your dog gets to live forever as a space explorer.
A new name and a playable demo
Observer Interactive is an independent studio based in the North of England. The company was founded in 2023 by a group of developers with a combined 60 years of experience across AAA and indie game development. The team previously announced this project under the name Good Boy. They have since partnered with publisher Team17 and rebranded the game as Rover's Tale. You do not have to wait until 2026 to try it out. A playable demo is available right now on Steam.
The core gameplay loop revolves around exploring an alien planet called Terra II alongside a human researcher. The developers describe the structure as an ecosystem-driven metroidvania. Your robotic dog explores various biomes and captures exotic alien creatures. You then use the unique abilities of those creatures to bypass environmental obstacles and open up new areas of the map. Environments range from lush forests to swamps and snowy mountain peaks.
You also have a home base to manage. Exploring the planet yields resources to upgrade your rover with new motherboard enhancements and tools. You can bring captured creatures back to base and scan them for research credits. The game includes cosmetic options to customize your robot dog's appearance, because fashion is still relevant in deep space.
Waking up the pack
You are not the only dog on Terra II. The planet is scattered with other dormant LAIKA rovers. Part of your mission involves finding these sleeping canine companions and rebooting them.
Once awake, these other dogs act as NPCs. You can complete specific quests for them to earn unique rewards. Helping them also unlocks memory tapes that reveal details about their past lives before they were put into robot bodies. The narrative focuses heavily on the bond between the human researcher and this pack of revived pets. The human companion even operates on a 24-hour schedule that shifts as the story progresses.
The latest trailer debuted on GOG's YouTube channel. GOG is heavily pushing its DRM-free ecosystem, and Rover's Tale will launch there on day one. The game is scheduled to launch in 2026. It will be available on PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. Console versions are planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the unannounced Nintendo Switch successor.
The trailer leans hard into a whimsical tone. The bright colors and cheerful music try to mask the underlying sadness of the setup. I am already preparing myself to get emotionally destroyed by a robot dog retrieving a memory tape about its former owner.
