Red Art Games is dropping the free Panic Bomber W update on August 20
The Super Bomberman Collection gets its eighth game next month, and it's a 1995 Super Famicom puzzle spin-off.
Red Art Games has confirmed August 20 as the release date for the free Super Bomberman: Panic Bomber W update to the Super Bomberman Collection. The publisher announced the date on social media, noting that the falling-block puzzle game will be added at no cost for players on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
As we previously reported, the collection itself shadow-dropped digitally back in February, bringing together seven classic 16-bit titles. Red Art Games detailed the addition of this eighth game earlier in July, but the official release date confirmation finally locks in when players can actually download it.
Panic Bomber W is a bit of a departure from the standard top-down arena combat. Developed by Raizing and published by Hudson Soft in March 1995, it originally launched exclusively for the Super Famicom in Japan.
The Bomberman series built its reputation on couch multiplayer, popularizing the multi-tap accessory during the 1990s. When Konami fully acquired Hudson Soft in 2011, they took ownership of the entire catalog. For years, much of that 16-bit library remained stranded on legacy hardware. The February shadow-drop of the Super Bomberman Collection finally fixed that, but leaving out the puzzle spin-offs left a slight gap in the Super Famicom era representation.
Chain reactions and Big Bombs
Instead of navigating a grid and trapping opponents in blast radiuses, the game converts the franchise mechanics into a competitive falling-block puzzler. It supports up to four players and plays a lot like Puyo Puyo or Tetris Attack. You build elaborate chain reactions to fill up a meter, which then lets you drop "Big Bombs" and garbage blocks onto your opponents' screens.
Panic Bomber actually saw a few different iterations across different hardware platforms in the mid-90s, including versions for the PC Engine and Nintendo's Virtual Boy. The "W" in the Super Famicom title denotes its specific flavor of the puzzle mechanics, optimized for the standard SNES controller layout and four-player multi-tap setups. The modern port is hitting everything from PC to the Switch 2, ensuring the multiplayer aspect isn't bottlenecked by hardware choices.
This August update is the first time Panic Bomber W is getting an official Western localization and digital re-release in over three decades. The base collection already did the heavy lifting of translating Super Bomberman 4 and 5 into English for the first time, and adding this 1995 spin-off rounds out the 16-bit era catalog.
Baked into the physical media
Red Art Games also confirmed that the update will be included on the physical cartridge and disc versions of the collection. The French boutique publisher, which started out doing limited physical runs for indie games in 2018, partnered with Konami to handle both the digital porting and the physical distribution for this project.
Having the patch data actually printed on the physical media is a welcome detail for anyone buying the boxed copy. It saves buyers from needing to connect to a server just to get the complete eight-game roster years down the line.
