Realmforge Studios is making a co-op baking action game for 2027
The developers behind the Dungeons series are pivoting to a fairy-tale action-adventure about fighting a plague with magical pastries.
Publisher Kalypso Media and developer Realmforge Studios have announced Rise of the Spellbaker, a fairy-tale action-adventure game coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027. The game was officially revealed today during Gamescom 2026 in Cologne.

The story kicks off during the annual Harvest Festival in the magical realm of Khemia. According to the official description provided to Play-Asia, the local witches had prepared a massive feast from sacred recipes. A sudden plague called the Rot then sweeps the land, turning every pastry into rot and spawning swarms of vermin. You play as a witch who survives the initial outbreak and has to fight back using a mix of traditional combat and magical baking mechanics.
A pivot from dungeon management
Realmforge Studios is based in Munich and is best known for the Dungeons franchise. That series focuses on comedic underground management and strategy, most recently with Dungeons 4 in late 2023. Moving to a third-person action-adventure game is a major shift for the studio. I am curious to see how their brand of humor translates to a fairy-tale setting, though the companion roster suggests they are keeping things weird.
The core hook is using baked goods as weapons. The concept of "spellbaking" replaces traditional spellcasting. Instead of throwing fireballs, you are literally baking offensive pastries like Crescent Waves and Shortcrust Grenades to fight off the Rot. You also get a standard cat familiar, little flour creatures called Biscies, and a talking sourdough starter named Hermann to help you rebuild and decorate your village.
Six players in a coven
The game supports solo play, but the developers are pushing a co-op mode that supports up to six players at once. They call this the Coven mechanic. Six players throwing explosive pastries on screen at the same time sounds chaotic, which is probably the point. The village customization aspect implies a gameplay loop of venturing out into the corrupted lands to fight the Rot, gathering ingredients, and returning home to upgrade your base and bake better weapons.
The announcement trailer features a rhyming narrator setting up the premise. The narrator explains that "once upon a time there was a spell baker" who used sweet magic to defy the dread. The visual style leans heavily into a stylized, colorful aesthetic that contrasts with the grim concept of a rotting plague.
Releasing across current hardware
Kalypso Media is a German publisher founded in 2006, known for handling strategy and simulation games like Tropico 6 and Railway Empire 2. The company acquired full ownership of Realmforge in 2020 and is targeting a 2027 release window for this new project.
The PC version will launch across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store simultaneously. The console release skips the Nintendo Switch entirely, launching only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The project also received development funding from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.
