Prospero Win 0.1.0 runs Windows games natively on a PS5

The first public release of Prospero Win turns a jailbroken PlayStation 5 into a native Windows PC gaming machine using Wine and DXVK.

Homebrew developer mpereiraesaa has released version 0.1.0 of Prospero Win, a compatibility layer that runs Windows PC games directly on a jailbroken PlayStation 5. The project surfaced earlier in October 2026 with video clips showing Half-Life 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV running on Sony hardware, but this is the first ready-made release available to the public.

This is not a local network streaming solution. The application carries its own copy of Wine and executes the code locally on the console. Because the PlayStation 5 is built on an x86-64 AMD Zen 2 processor, 64-bit Windows programs run natively on the CPU without instruction translation.

For older software, the developer built a custom x86 dynamic binary translator to handle 32-bit games. Graphics translation relies on DXVK and Vulkan, which intercept Direct3D 8, 9, 10, and 11 calls and translate them for the console's RDNA 2 GPU. This is the same underlying translation technology that Valve uses in Proton for the Steam Deck, adapted here for Sony's proprietary operating system. The runtime also supports older OpenGL titles, 2D games, and basic Windows programs that draw using GDI.

Controller mapping and profiles

The software routes game audio directly through the console's standard audio output. Input is handled through a built-in launcher that maintains individual profiles for each installed game, allowing users to save specific graphics and control settings per title.

You can plug in a standard USB keyboard and mouse, or use the DualSense controller. The application translates the DualSense inputs into Xbox-style XInput, supporting the analog sticks, triggers, and rumble motors. The launcher also includes a custom mapping tool to bind keyboard and mouse commands to the gamepad for older PC titles that lack native controller support.

The hardware advantage

The project takes its name from the hardware it runs on. During its development leading up to the 2020 launch, Sony's internal codename for the PlayStation 5 was Prospero. The console's architecture closely mirrors a standard gaming PC, which makes it an obvious target for Wine-based compatibility layers.

I want to see how the custom 32-bit translator handles heavier CPU loads in games from the late 2000s. Running 64-bit code natively on a Zen 2 processor is straightforward, but dynamic translation always introduces overhead, and the PS5 CPU is already six years old. The developer notes that the current build is experimental, with some games working well and many others completely untested.

Getting the software running requires a jailbroken PlayStation 5 on a firmware version vulnerable to current kernel exploits. The homebrew scene relies on users keeping their consoles offline and unpatched to maintain access to these exploits. As developers continue to map out the console's operating system, native PC execution gives those modified systems a massive library of playable games without waiting for dedicated console ports.
