The NEOGEO AES+ is delayed until September 2027

Plaion is pushing the ASIC-based SNK retro console back nearly a year due to component shortages, but pre-orders are getting a bonus.

Plaion is delaying the release of the NEOGEO AES+ to September 16, 2027. The hardware-level reproduction of SNK's classic console was originally scheduled to launch on November 12, 2026, but manufacturing bottlenecks have pushed the timeline back nearly a year.

According to a statement posted by PLAION Americas on X (and mirrored on Bluesky), the delay comes down to a lack of available parts. "The response to NEOGEO AES+ has been extraordinary, but global component supply constraints mean we simply cannot manufacture enough systems to deliver the worldwide launch our community deserves," the company wrote.

Not exactly off the shelf

The NEOGEO AES+ isn't a standard emulation box running a Linux frontend. Plaion Replai, the retro hardware division that previously developed the Atari 2600+ and The Spectrum recreations, engineered custom ASIC chips to replicate the original 1990 SNK hardware at the silicon level. Plaion (formerly Koch Media before a 2022 rebranding under the Embracer Group) has carved out a reliable niche with these authentic hardware revivals.

It plays physical cartridges. Rebuilding that architecture today requires specific memory components, and global supply chains are currently strained by heavy investments in AI infrastructure. Building a 1:1 hardware clone in the middle of a global chip shortage is either genius or madness. Possibly both.

Rather than shipping a tiny batch of consoles this winter and watching them immediately hit auction sites, they're using the extra ten months to secure parts and expand the production run. Existing $249.99 pre-orders will keep their priority status without any price increases. To smooth things over, every console from the launch production run will include a Founding Supporter Bonus. For standard and Anniversary Edition buyers, that means you'll get a free NEOGEO AES+ gamepad. Ultimate Edition customers will receive a 30 percent discount voucher for future cartridge releases.

SNK originally designed the Advanced Entertainment System as the home equivalent of its MVS arcade cabinets, and this new hardware was licensed to celebrate the platform's 35th anniversary. It brought pixel-perfect versions of Metal Slug, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and Samurai Shodown V Special into living rooms. The catch was always the price. The original cartridges were massive, packed with ROM chips, and often cost hundreds of dollars each. Plaion's modern recreation aims to capture that exact arcade-accurate experience, complete with ten standalone physical cartridge releases planned for the launch window.

Playable next week

The hardware itself is real and functional, even if mass production is stalled. Next week, Tokyo Game Show attendees will get hands-on time with the console on the show floor. I can't wait to get mine!

The company closed its announcement by apologizing for the significant delay and thanking fans for sticking with the project. Anyone attending the Tokyo Game Show can test the ASIC implementation themselves starting next Thursday. The rest of the production run will finally ship in late 2027.
