Plaion has officially opened direct pre-orders for THE A1200, a full-size recreation of the Commodore Amiga 1200, with a release date of December 4, 2026.

Developed by Retro Games Ltd. And distributed under the Plaion Replai label, THE A1200 is a 1:1 scale replica of the classic computer. Unlike 2022's THEA500 Mini, this model features a fully functional keyboard. It connects via HDMI with support for 50Hz PAL and 60Hz NTSC output, and it boots directly into either an integrated Amiga Workbench 3.1 desktop or a game carousel. The package includes an authentic two-button tank mouse and an eight-button gamepad.

The hardware is not just a closed ecosystem for games. The inclusion of Workbench 3.1 allows users to run productivity software, creative applications, and development tools. The developers also engineered a new RTG (ReTargetable Graphics) mode, which lets compatible software use higher-resolution display modes on the desktop.

The AGA chipset and a short lifespan

Commodore released the original Amiga 1200 in October 1992. It was the company's third-generation 32-bit machine, built around the Motorola 68EC020 CPU and the Advanced Graphics Architecture (AGA) chipset. That architecture allowed the computer to display 256 colors simultaneously, or over 260,000 in HAM-8 mode.

It was a budget-friendly powerhouse that gained massive traction in the United Kingdom and across Europe. Commodore's bankruptcy in April 1994 killed the hardware prematurely, but the computer maintained a massive cult following. The microcomputing and demoscene communities kept the platform alive for decades, producing homebrew software and hardware accelerators long after Commodore closed its doors.

Sideloading and late ports

The replica emulates the Amiga 1200 (AGA) alongside selectable Amiga 500 (OCS), Amiga 600 (ECS), and CD32 configurations. It comes with 25 pre-installed games, including Beneath a Steel Sky and Turrican, but the real draw is the USB-A ports for WHDLoad file sideloading.

Full WHDLoad support out of the box makes loading custom software trivial, allowing users to easily load up recent aftermarket releases. For example, the original The Settlers II was released in 1996 exclusively for MS-DOS/PC, skipping the Amiga platform entirely at the time. An official Amiga port was not released until late 2025, and it runs perfectly through WHDLoad on these modern replicas.

Availability and a holiday release

THE A1200 is available for pre-order now, with release and shipping starting December 4, 2026. Payment is taken at checkout.

Plaion and Retro Games Ltd. Have been steadily working through the European microcomputer catalog. Retro Games Ltd. Previously designed THEC64 Maxi and THEA500 Mini. Plaion, formerly known as Koch Media before its 2022 rebranding under Embracer Group, has been balancing its major software publishing with this retro hardware division. They also recently announced THE Spectrum, a recreation of the ZX Spectrum.

The jump to a full-size Amiga 1200 makes sense given how many productivity applications rely on a real keyboard. The mini consoles are fine for quick arcade sessions, but a real Amiga needs physical keys.
