Atlus released a special music video today to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Persona 3. The original PlayStation 2 role-playing game launched in Japan exactly two decades ago on July 13, 2006.

According to Persona Central, the "Persona 3 20th Anniversary Remix" includes a new musical arrangement by DJ VaVa. The video pairs the audio with original pixel art created by illustrator Motocross Saito.

The Persona franchise started in 1996 with Revelations: Persona on the original PlayStation. The series began as a spin-off of the broader Shin Megami Tensei universe. The first three entries were traditional, somewhat niche dungeon crawlers with a heavy focus on psychological themes. Persona 3 changed the formula entirely.

Atlus introduced the calendar system and the Social Link mechanic. Players had to balance high school exams, part-time jobs, and hanging out with friends during the day. At midnight, the world entered the hidden "Dark Hour," forcing the cast to explore a massive, randomized tower called Tartarus.

Blending a high school life simulator with a punishing RPG was a massive risk in 2006. The contrast between the bright daytime pop aesthetics and the grim nighttime horror elements gave the game a distinct atmosphere. It paid off, laying the groundwork for the massive global success of Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal.

The music was a huge part of that identity shift. Composer Shoji Meguro abandoned traditional orchestral fantasy scores. He opted for a soundtrack blending hip-hop, J-pop, and rock. The anniversary remix video directly honors that musical legacy by putting a heavy spotlight on Lotus Juice's vocal tracks.

Three million copies of Reload

The anniversary celebration overlaps with a major sales milestone for the game's modern incarnation. Series character designer Shigenori Soejima published a commemorative illustration today. The artwork celebrates both the 20-year mark and Persona 3 Reload officially crossing three million units sold.

Atlus launched Reload in February 2024. The ground-up remake is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles. It also launched on Xbox Game Pass. The remake brought the 2006 title up to the visual standards of Persona 5, complete with a fully voiced social cast and overhauled combat mechanics.

A pixel art tribute

The anniversary video leans heavily into nostalgia. Motocross Saito's pixel art reimagines the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad in a retro aesthetic that the original PS2 game never actually used. DJ VaVa's remix blends multiple battle themes and daily life tracks into a single cohesive arrangement.

The original game has seen multiple iterations over the last 20 years. Atlus released the FES expansion in 2007 and the Portable version for the PSP in 2009. Fans have debated the definitive way to play the game for two decades. The core story about mortality and making the most of a single year remains exactly the same across all of them.
