PC RPG The Necromancer's Tale is coming to consoles in 2026
Psychic Software's gothic RPG about raising the dead and manipulating 18th-century nobles will hit Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo's next system.
Psychic Software and publisher Silver Lining Interactive are bringing The Necromancer's Tale to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch 2 in the second quarter of 2026. The gothic RPG originally launched on PC via Steam in July 2025 after more than five years of development.
You play as a minor noble in the fictional Kingdom of Rulsthen. The year is 1733. You return to your estate to find your father dead under mysterious circumstances. In the process of investigating his demise, you acquire an ancient spellbook. Naturally, the most logical way to solve a family murder is to master dark magic and raise an army of reanimated corpses.
The roleplaying elements start before you even cast your first spell. Character creation takes the form of an interactive backstory rather than a visual slider menu. You answer a series of multiple-choice questions to define your gender, early life, and professional background. Choosing a military, diplomatic, or academic career directly impacts your starting skills and alters dialogue options throughout the campaign.
The setting leans heavily into the historical tension between emerging science and old-world superstition. Your early experiments are small. You decipher pages, gather mundane ingredients, and perform basic rituals on a stove. Eventually, you graduate to patching together bodies in a laboratory and summoning demons.
Please do not lynch the wizard
The game relies heavily on social manipulation rather than constant dungeon crawling. The script contains roughly 400,000 words of text. You interact with over 180 unique NPCs throughout the city of Marn and its surrounding wilderness. Each character has a specific side quest and a hand-drawn portrait. The developers opted for traditional 2D art instead of generative tools for the character dialogue screens.
You have to balance your descent into madness with basic social survival. A built-in trust system tracks how the local townsfolk view your actions. If public opinion drops too low, the locals will take matters into their own hands. Getting tried in court and hanged is a real possibility. Getting lynched by an angry mob is another. Keeping your macabre hobbies a secret requires diplomacy, blackmail, and coercion. You can even attend opulent ballrooms to maintain your cover as a regular aristocrat.
Hex grids and auto-resolve
When diplomacy fails, combat plays out on a tactical hex grid. You deploy your undead minions alongside human allies to fight natural and supernatural enemies. Enemies range from local guards who ask too many questions to rival magic users and supernatural entities. Spells cover the usual area-of-effect damage, but the focus is heavily on positioning and managing your reanimated troops. You have to maintain your army by using repair rituals to keep your skeletons and zombies in fighting shape.
Tactical combat is not mandatory. Psychic Software included an auto-resolve system for players who prefer to focus entirely on the story. This allows you to skip the grid battles and let the game calculate the outcome based on your army's current strength. It is a welcome option for anyone who wants to play a social RPG without micromanaging skeleton formations.
The Xbox trailer only mentions Microsoft's hardware, and the game is available to wishlist on the Xbox store. Silver Lining Interactive confirmed the multiplatform release schedule in a separate announcement. The PC version currently has a "Very Positive" user rating on Steam, where players have praised the writing but noted the deliberately slow pacing. The game draws frequent comparisons to classic isometric titles like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, though with a much narrower focus on a single character's moral decay.
Adapting a text-heavy, menu-driven CRPG for gamepads is always a challenge. Psychic Software will have to map complex inventory management and hex-grid targeting to analog sticks. Console pricing details will arrive closer to the 2026 launch window.
