Nintendo released version 1.6.1 of the Nintendo GameCube Classics app for the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack today. The patch specifically targets a critical bug in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. According to Nintendo, the update addresses an issue that was causing the game to crash and potentially wipe player save data.

You can only play the GameCube library if you own the newer Nintendo Switch 2 and pay for the $80 annual Expansion Pack tier. Nintendo added Pokémon XD to the service just last month on March 18. That makes this a relatively fast turnaround for a bug fix on a 21-year-old game. The emulation wrapper handles most titles well, but edge cases like this crash bug occasionally slip through the testing process.

The Genius Sonority catalog

I have always found the history of the game's developer fascinating. The Pokémon Company and Nintendo formed Genius Sonority in the early 2000s specifically to build 3D Pokémon games for home consoles. They originally built this 2005 GameCube title as a direct successor to Pokémon Colosseum. The studio reused a lot of assets from that previous game, but Pokémon XD carved out its own identity. The game focuses heavily on snagging and purifying corrupted Shadow Pokémon. The cover monster, Shadow Lugia, is the most famous example.

The Orre region provides a completely different atmosphere than the mainline handheld games. It is essentially a desert wasteland with very few wild Pokémon encounters. You spend most of your time stealing corrupted monsters back from enemy trainers. While Genius Sonority did develop Pokémon Battle Revolution and puzzle games like Pokémon Trozei and Pokémon Shuffle, they have also continued to develop RPGs, specifically their Denpa Men series, with titles released on 3DS and Nintendo Switch.

Physical copies of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness have commanded absurd prices on the secondhand market for years. Before Nintendo added it to the Expansion Pack last month, buying a used GameCube disc was the only legal way to play it. Complete copies regularly sell for well over $200. Having it available on a modern digital service makes the game accessible to people who refuse to pay collector prices.

Losing a save file hurts

Losing hours of progress in a role-playing game is brutal. That pain is even worse in a title that requires as much grinding as a retro Pokémon spin-off. Purifying Shadow Pokémon takes time, and losing that progress to an emulation crash is a fast way to ruin a weekend.

Only on the Switch 2

Nintendo has kept the GameCube library locked entirely to the Switch 2 hardware since the console launched in June 2025. The original Switch does not have access to this specific app. The hardware bump provided by the newer console allows these heavier 3D games to run smoothly, but bugs like this show that bringing legacy software to modern platforms still requires ongoing maintenance. At least this one got caught early.
