Ninja Gaiden 4 just got its first story expansion and two new weapons

Team Ninja and PlatinumGames have released The Two Masters, the first story expansion for Ninja Gaiden 4. The $14.99 update is available today across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It adds three new campaign chapters, two additional weapons, and a 100-encounter endurance mode called Abyssal Road.

The base game launched in October 2025 and changed the formula for the long-running action franchise. Koei Tecmo's Team Ninja co-developed the title, which is published by Xbox Game Studios. They introduced a new protagonist named Yakumo and moved the setting to a rain-soaked, cyberpunk version of Tokyo. The Two Masters picks up immediately after the main campaign concludes. With the Dark Dragon defeated, Yakumo and series veteran Ryu Hayabusa must team up to fight a mysterious new threat.

Scythes and serpent gauntlets

The DLC gives both playable characters a new tool for crowd control and close-quarters combat. Yakumo receives the Solitaire, a massive scythe built for ranged attacks. Ryu gets the Jakotsumon, a pair of bladed serpent gauntlets designed for rapid strikes and closing the distance on enemies.

You do not need to beat the new story chapters to use them. The weapons unlock mid-campaign for anyone still working their way through the base game. This gives struggling players a few new options for dealing with the game's notorious difficulty spikes.

The environment design also takes a different direction from the core game. PlatinumGames producer and director Yuji Nakao told Xbox Wire that the team wanted to contrast the new content with the gloomy look of the original release.

"This time, we were finally able to set things under clear skies," Nakao said. "Yakumo's stages were created with an urban, modern setting befitting the new Ninja."

100 waves on the Abyssal Road

Players who finish the new story chapters will unlock Abyssal Road. This is a pure endurance challenge with 100 successive combat encounters. The mode pulls enemies from both the base game and the expansion. It also introduces two new enemy mechanics called Special Blood Essence and Frenzied. These modifiers alter battle conditions dynamically as the waves progress, forcing players to adapt their combos on the fly.

Survival modes are a staple of character action games, but 100 waves is a massive time commitment. One mistake in the later stages will likely send you back to the beginning.

Free for Deluxe Edition owners

The Two Masters costs $14.99 on its own, but it is a free download for anyone who owns the Deluxe Edition or the Deluxe Upgrade. The Xbox Wire post originated from Microsoft's channels, but the pricing and release timing apply equally to the PlayStation and Steam versions. For PC players on Steam, the Deluxe Upgrade can often provide better value than the standalone DLC, especially during sales.

Even if you skip the paid content, a free patch is rolling out alongside the release. The update includes balance adjustments, new weapon set customization options, and bug fixes to improve overall combat responsiveness.

Ninja Gaiden 4 already demanded a lot of patience from players on its default difficulty. Adding a 100-wave gauntlet with escalating enemy modifiers is exactly the kind of punishment the community expects from this franchise.
