Epic just added a game about drunk tank driving to its free lineup

Atomic Fabrik's 2019 driving simulator Need for Spirit: Offroad Edition is currently free to claim on the Epic Games Store. The promotion runs until April 2, 2026, at 5:00 PM UTC.

This drop is part of Epic's standard weekly giveaway cadence. It arrives in addition to the other free games I covered here recently, padding out the storefront's regular Thursday rotation. Epic has been running this promotion since the store launched in late 2018. They use free software to build a user base that can actively compete with Valve's dominance on Steam.

Contraband and drunk vision

Originally released on March 7, 2019, Need for Spirit: Offroad Edition tasks players with transporting illicit beverages across rough terrain. It is a direct sequel to the original Need for Spirit. The core gameplay loop involves navigating terrible roads without destroying your fragile cargo. You pick up a load of contraband, stare at a muddy incline, and try to feather the throttle enough to crest the hill without flipping over.

The genre of "slowly driving heavy vehicles through mud" has a dedicated following on PC. Games like Spintires, MudRunner, and SnowRunner built an entire subculture around differential locks, tire pressure, and winch physics. Need for Spirit attempts to capture a fraction of that market, but with a heavily arcade-focused, humorous approach rather than strict simulation.

The vehicle roster abandons realism almost immediately. You start the campaign with standard off-road trucks, but eventually unlock military tanks to complete your delivery routes. Atomic Fabrik also included a "drunk vision" mechanic that distorts the screen. This visual filter kicks in during specific moments, making the already difficult physics simulation harder to manage.

52 percent positive on Steam

The game holds a "Mostly Positive" rating on Steam, with 70% of 30 user reviews being positive. It works, which is the nicest thing I can say about it. The physics are notoriously floaty. Players frequently report that vehicles bounce off terrain in unpredictable ways. This turns a simple delivery mission into a frustrating physics puzzle where the truck behaves more like a balloon than a two-ton machine.

Atomic Fabrik has a history of releasing small, inexpensive games across digital storefronts. Their catalog is mostly filled with asset-heavy arcade titles, simple simulators, and casual puzzle games. Need for Spirit: Offroad Edition is arguably their most visible release to date, purely because it secured a spot in Epic's massive giveaway rotation.

Saving three dollars

While 'I Need Spirit! Off-Road Edition' is listed at $2.99 on the Epic Games Store, its usual price on Steam is $0.99. Epic Games has spent years giving away massive blockbusters like Grand Theft Auto V, Death Stranding, and the Tomb Raider trilogy to draw users to its platform. Sometimes they give away industry-defining classics. Other times, they give away a three-dollar game about driving a tank full of booze through a low-resolution forest.
